thanks. i geus it would be better to stick with julies. i will not overstock my tank. Maybe some julies would be nice. can you tell what julies I should keep and how many i can keep in a 40 gallon tank. thanks!!!! okay i will listen. I WILL NOT overstock my aquariums!!!!As stated before you shouldn't keep mbuna in less then a 48 inch tank a 40 will be okay as a growout but you really should just use a 55 or get one for once they are adults. Yellow labs may be relatively peaceful considering that they are mbuna but they quickly reach 4-5 inches in length and at that size the confines of a small tank really begin to trigger aggression. if you must do mbuna pick a less aggressive dwarf mbuna like P. Salousi (max 2.5-3 inches) and get 1 male along with 4-6 females. Another option from malawi you could try is a single male aulonocara that won't get too large such as and keep it with a large number of females, though this is less colorful as female aulonocara are generally a drab brown-grey. If this is no good then look at tanganyikan julies or shell dwellers, rift valley cichlids can be pretty hard to keep in smaller then 55 setups.
Thanks!!!!in a 40 most julies would work fine in a sizeable group of 6-8, except for regani because of it's adult size, just get only 1 species of julie to avoid hybrids, i recommend either dickfeildi or marleri but look up your favourite one and use them. If you go with a few less julies (like around 4, with 1 male), choose a species under 4 inches, and leave some open space you could probably get away with a single additional species that does not live among rocks such as goby cichlids or shell dwellers.
alternatively you could do a species only with neolamprolagous leleupi
