id run 2 ac110's or emps on a 55. ran my 40b with an ac110 and a penguin 200.
im so used to overfiltering that now im freaking out about running my 75 on a single ac110 because i ran outta filters.

If you run an EMP400 on a 30g, then wouldn't running 2 on a 55g be pretty much the same?
A 55g is pretty much 2 30's stacked next to each other.

i see your point and i don't disagree with you really. I just would look at what the stock is on the 30 gallon. I keep a planted comm tank that has a penguin 160 on it and i can't imagine using an emperor 400 for what i have in it. if i had an emperor laying around i would use it but i would never go out and buy one for that setup. a 55 gallon that has cichlids i totally can understand putting 2 emperor 400s on. don't you agree it has to do with the bio load and other factors that can help or hurt the bio load?

i think the filter is fine to tell you the truth i have both those and the marineland biowheel ones and they are the exact same thing only the drsfostersmith model doesnt have biowheels
the skimmer is useless it is a piece of plastic that sits on the top of the water and just takes surface water and mixes it into the water beneath but it is primarily useless and i just stopped using the piece
overall i would buy 3 of the drsfostersmith ones 75 model and for $90 you will get 1050 gallons per hour wich is some serious circulation
the key i have found with HOBs is filter maintainence if you clean the cartridges once a month they will be fine
gl with your new tank

I don't have an AC but do like the two Emperor 400 idea. On my 55 I had one Eheim 2215 canister, one bio-wheel and a HOT Magnum (hang on tank) Massive water movment for that size tank and is the best mech/polishing HOB you can buy. Save yourself the money on replacing cartriges on the "extra" biowheel and get the Magnum. Plus the Mangnum can come with a biowheel attachment and you can "aim" the waters output like a powerhead - best of both worlds.

I always point mine at dead areas to blast up all the junk on the bottom and let the Mag pick it up... :D

how much can you really fit in the mag though? i'm skeptical about them
