how much can you really fit in the mag though? i'm skeptical about them

How much bio media? The Mag comes with a basket to put whatever you want in there. I use one box of biomax and the filter sleeve. The basket is for carbon but I never use the stuff. The other cartrage is a water polishing fine pad. This thing turns over the water many more times over that regular HOB's. Plus, most HOB's are noisy to get started after a WC and the biowheels I have to add water manually. The Mag you don't have to and it's silent.

which mag model do you have? theres a huge range in price on these things too

I have the "HOT Magnum 250". I don't buy the large models but for the HOB model, I swear by them. Every advantage of most HOB's and more but the drawback is it's a little more involved changing the filter sleeves since the canister hangs on back but is sealed.

idk, for the money i would spend on ONE of those i can get TWO emperor 400s or even get 2 marineland 350s for about 70 bucks

I bought mine used on CL for $20. Just try and decide what you want the most now, "then" start aggressivly shopping for the deals. That's what I do and why I threw out the suggestion.

true true not bad thinking. i'm getting the tank first though cuz nowadays people will sell completes with so so filters included. i wanna see what i get with the tank and build off of that filtration

I've been considering a HOT Magnum, but they are pricey! Glad to hear they work well...
On my long tanks (33long, 20long, 40breeder, etc.), I always run 2 smaller HOB's at opposite ends to keep the temp stable & uniform without a powerhead. One AC50 for mechanical & chemical, then a smaller HOB or internal full of Bio-Max only. The only requirement for the smaller one is it has to prime itself. On my 20Glong, I used a cheapo Whisper 10i internal. Basically a cup with a motor in the bottom, full of Bio-Max. I call it the poor man's sump. Without the resistance from the cartridge, it really flows a ton more water than its rated for. It also allows me to completely clean the AC50 without a mini-cycle.
