OK so i have a 55 gallon set up (stocking in sig.) and these fish will out grow this tank so my lfs is having a sale and i want to buy another 55 and join them together to make a tank measuring 48x20x26. has anybody done this before?

sweet idea.
very possible. do a search on this site, its been done before.
filtration expansion, u adding a sump?
what filtration u got already?
what are u gonna do with ur fish while ur making the tank changes? im not so sure how long it will all take. 48 hrs?

sounds like a good idea and might be possible. but if it doesnt work than your out 2 55gal tanks. why not put them end to end? then you would have an 8ft tank! the fish would probely do better in the wider tank you want though.

Yes a 30 gallon sump will be added and also 2 wisper 60's. As for the fish some will be moved to 15 gallon rubbermaid. and some will be moved to some of my uncles tanks as he will have an empty 30 g when he gets his 55.

Yes an 8 foot tank would be awesome but i could still only get ~12 in fish cause they would not have space to turn around. widening the tank is the whole purpose of this build. One of these days i may hook up 4 55's and have a tank that is 8'X 20"X 26":naughty:

Yes I've done this several times.

I removed two long sides, cleaned the edges and siliconed them together 1/8" apart and clamped with bar clamps, then siliconed a 4" strip of glass centered on the new joint and clamped it in.

I made a new top & bottom brace out of angle aluminum
Keep us posted w/pix,

No, it was my pre-digital days :D . It went to a customer when I was done.

Sounds very easy to do. For me, I would remove two long peices, thenplace them together, than silicone the side peices tooger, add a 4" brace or two. Im probably missing some parts.
