2 Week old Leo... Need help on feeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Try feeding what the mother was eating just chopped up very small

My female was eating just pellets so that's what I fed the pups and they took them from the day after birth

Magnus, keep trying the live blackworms & leave them in there a while.

whts the porpose of the high temp? just increased metabolism?

ive never had an issue raising pups in 80 degee water

i would just keep the lights off for a few days and dont do any drastic waterchanges. ive noticed my pups dont eat as much w large waterchanges...

Do you know how long they can starve before dying? Someone say 7 days :irked:

Can we get a pic of these BD's? I've never seen one so young, lol.

I dont have a black diamond :) it a bd/leo

Is the ray breathing hard, at that high a temp I would be very worried about oxygen in the water. I have seen rays die from temp spikes up to 86 because there wasn't enough aeration with those temps.

I added a air stone and a strip bubble thingy also to help provide more o2

Can someone tell me what they do with their pups? I want to get a couple of idea so i can copy :) Really dont want to lose the bugger. I'll be pissed if it does.

Was told it was eatting black worm while it was in nursery tank.

i already gave my advise. I would lower the temp, and keep offering food. Most CB pups eat fairly quickly if not overly stressed in shipping.
I have had a few pups of my own and have purchased quite a few, and never had temps that high with pups...or any rays.

Mike at h20 knows his stuff, maybe he can shed some more light on the reasoning?

Good luck with your ray/s.

2 weeks is very young to take delivery of a pup if not born with you. If you bought this then ask the owner what they were feeding it.

I too am interested in why it should be kept at 90? Is the ph 6.7 naturally or have you lowered it?

I suspect some of this is stress, if it wasn't kept at 90 before with it's mum then cannot see why at that level and whoever said to do it in the first place should have told you to add loads of aeration or they may not have known what they were doing? If you are artificially moving to 6.7 then I would aim to get back to tap water as messing with ph only ever leads to stress and fluctuating parameters.
I assume the tank is cycled? What is the Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate at?

If you did not breed this fish then the lesson is to watch it feed
Before you buy and to ask the owner for a list of food.

I would also take one persons advice and stick to it you need stability and not fluctuations....if it were me I would slowly lower the temp to 80, keep up regular water changes of not more than 10% per Few days and allow the water to slowly return to tap water parameters (assuming it isn't) use dechlorinator and test water daily until it feeds well and keep testing weekly.

Keep the lights off and leave it alone as much as possible.

I would listen to t1 and find out what mum was eating.

I bow down to mikes advice if there is logic behind the 90 degrees but cannot understand it for now.

The reason for my advice is only cause I bred the fish and I know exactly what they are accustomed to in my system before it was shipped out to the customer. The reason for 90 is that is the temp I keep my pup system at for first few months until there moved into the breeding system which is kept in the mid 80's. The 90 degree water helps to increase there metabolism, they start eating faster and once that happens you can slowly bring it down. It is not cure for all but helped me with pups in past.

So when pup gets stressed after shipping and stops eating I always tell customer to bring temp back up cause that is what the pups is used to already and feed blackworms cause that is the only food we feed our pups. Of course can try other foods as well but we feed blackworms only.

If want lower the temp thats fine just bring in down slowly and see what happens.

But this is how we keep our pups.

Second the pups are not two weeks old he has had it for about 1-2 weeks they are 7 weeks old now. My advice just keep lights off, temp up with alot of air and feed little blackworms every other day till see it start eating. Make sure your water is clean no large water changes multiple times a week. Just do one water change a week and keep the PH and temp stable.

Also your PH is identical to my system so try keep it stable.

I assume from the response that they came from you? In which case I think he just needs to be asking you the questions and simply feeding whatever you were feeding them on....a care sheet is a good "added value" item in this case.

If my pup was not eating I would be speaking to the breeder only and doing whatever they said...and I would have asked in advance what I need to be feeding.

The advice you have given sounds correct and this is what I mean by listening to one person only...if not you are jumping fro. One thing to another an causing stress for owner and fish.

Yes you are correct these pups were bred here by me.

Beside Mikes very good advice of heat, I'll recommend a weak current to keep the rays active. Small live feeders to keep the ray active and entertained seems to help too. Plus the added benefit of live food having good nutritional content.

Basically treat it like a child. :)
