2 x XP3s or 1 x FX5?

Are your water parameters in check (ammonia, nitrite)? Is the water mechanically filtered to your satisfaction? Then you are "properly" filtered.

if i were you i will go with 2 xp3 cause fx5 known for stop running after a power outage or after stop to gas-out. 2 xp3 will do just fines, easier to clean and does a wonderful job. 2 filters always better than 1.

No, they're not known for that. Out of the two, and I own and currently run both, FX5 is far more reliable and easier to prime.

I have one FX5 and one Xp3 on my 150 tall. The tandem works great....Move one Xp3 to the 55 and pick up another or a 2217 on ebay for the other 55, and run the fx5 and xp3 on your 150....IMO

I have always liked two of the same filter on one tank for the "just in case" scenarios. I think that's why I bought two of the XP3s to begin with, as I knew I would eventually move into a 125g tank - just so happens I found a great deal on a 150g instead.

If I don't have to spend $400 for more filtration then I would prefer to go that route as I could use that for something else. However, if two XP3s simply won't cut it on my tank with that stock list then I will buy extra filtration.

Completely in check, of course all fish are still juvies which is why I'm questioning my current filtration.

I'd just keep an eye on your water parameters and until there is an issue with the filters not being able to keep up just use what you've got. As you've said there's no need to throw $400 into filtration that you don't need.

I run to XP3's on a 135gal without problems and that's with a large and very dirty fish. I personally don't believe you are lacking in filtration. If it were me I would stick with the XP3's until you feel they are not doing the job. If you want some reassurance do a google search for AqAdvisor and enter your parameters there. It will give you an idea of where you stand.

If we're being completely honest here, my Rena XP3 makes me want to take it out the backyard and smash it with a baseball bat, Office Space style.

Just a pain to work with, IMO. Likes to leak out of the blue, priming sucks, and just an ugly looking filter period. I have it running my 33 gallon, believe it or not. Slightly overfiltered! ;)

You know the best thing I ever did to my XP3 was to add the Eheim Intake and spray bar kits. It is like a whole new filter
