My son did that yesterday (hes almost 2 1/2) lol No causalities in my tank though, he got it done in the time it took me to have a cigarette (outdoor smoker) I keep all my food on top of the fridge now lol

I have a 3year old son i just got him his own tank. he feeds only when we feed the other tanks we made a feeder for him out of a pill dispenser. the ones that have like 7 lided compartments. that way they always get the same amount of food. He loves it and i dont have to worry about him over feeding anything.

Always lock up the food.Even well meaning grownups that dont know fish can wreck a tank in short order.

speaking as a mom with grown kids and a grandma..

it much easier to teach the kids the right way to do things and show and help them do it right than it is to keep them out of stuff.

and even at 2 years old, do not underestimate their ability to learn and try to do the right thing. if you give a child a specific job that "helps" you, they will do that "job" and they won't do your "job".

When my grandsons come to visit, the first time they came here Michael was 3 and his younger brother was 1. he (Michael) wanted to feed the fish. i sat him down and explained that the fish eat special food and he can't feed them, but he could be a BIG help to me if he would use the spray bottle (vinegar and water) and the tea-towels and wipe off the front of the tanks for me after the fish eat because they are messy (peacock bass).

and that's what he did.. he followed me around, watched the fish eat, and then he sprayed the tanks and wiped them off after the fish ate. was a blast to watch, it was kinda cute and clumsy, but he did a great job of cleaning the tanks. and even better, when we were done, he was TIRED, and he went to bed and went to SLEEP.

AH...I bought my 2 year old a gold fish last week...She named the fish "Fish" We fed it and I explained a few things to her about the fish has to stay in the water. I also explained to her, under my breath, that the fish probably dies in a few days. I flushed Fish yesterday:( That gives me a litlle motivation to set my 55 back up now!

I still have to watch my 6 year old so she doesnt do that to me!

Sorry you lost some of your fish, I bet that was a mess.

I keep the fish food for my 4 year old's fish out of reach, and just give him a pinch every night so he can feed the fish himself. It's worked out great so far, he's had the tank over a year.

I remember these old days back when my little sister was 2 years old....she dumped whole package of fish food into a 10gal tank.....And i went freaked out when i saw the brown water. Lost six fish, saved 4 fish....and its not first time it happened when my 3 years old cousin decided to feed my fish with a can of shrimp pellets...it took whole can to dump into the same 10gal tank. God it smell so bad when the shrimp pellets' not so "pellet" anymore. Lost the entire stock. :( But i cant blame on them because when i was 3 years old, i decided to feed my fishes and boy my mom went freak out on me, no fish died.
