speaking as a mom with grown kids and a grandma..

it much easier to teach the kids the right way to do things and show and help them do it right than it is to keep them out of stuff.

and even at 2 years old, do not underestimate their ability to learn and try to do the right thing. if you give a child a specific job that "helps" you, they will do that "job" and they won't do your "job".

When my grandsons come to visit, the first time they came here Michael was 3 and his younger brother was 1. he (Michael) wanted to feed the fish. i sat him down and explained that the fish eat special food and he can't feed them, but he could be a BIG help to me if he would use the spray bottle (vinegar and water) and the tea-towels and wipe off the front of the tanks for me after the fish eat because they are messy (peacock bass).

and that's what he did.. he followed me around, watched the fish eat, and then he sprayed the tanks and wiped them off after the fish ate. was a blast to watch, it was kinda cute and clumsy, but he did a great job of cleaning the tanks. and even better, when we were done, he was TIRED, and he went to bed and went to SLEEP.

I totall agree, I have 3 kids 4 and under, if you involve them and teach them to help you out they love it! Plus they are getting to do what they want (like feed the fish) and it keeps them from trying to do it when you are not there.

Hahahaha my baby cousin ate a whole jar of tetramin, my aunt said his bm's stunk like fish food for a week.

And one time when I was keeping angels my sister had taken one out of the tank with the net because she wanted to pet it, it apparently jumped out and landed beneth my bed, I thought the cat had eaten it but about a week later I found the fish, and my sister confessed to me. Thyat wasn't as funny, mainly because I kicked my cat every time i saw her for like a week.

One of my friends told me that her little sisters would take a baby mollys out of their 10g and let them flop in her hand. She wanted to "play" with them. When her mom finally took away the net, she just reached in and scooped them out. They lost ten baby mollies in all.

Thats so funny i guess its the age my 2 year old little girl has a 10 gl in her room bad idea by the way with one gold fish thank god you cant kill a gold fish. becouse she to has fed a whole can of food to the poor thing. glad to know im not the only one who has went through that. so now the food stays out of little handswhen its not feeding time.

We put alarms on the glass tops, You can find them at the $.99 stores they are peal and stick and are very loud.(used for windows and doors) They have an on and off plus batteries are included . We have many Grandkids who love to feed fish .

If you need some let me know I always keep a supply handy.

I'm a little nervous when i let my 7 year old cousins near any of my tanks, nonetheless the food. they wanted to hold my mini crabs, boy was that tense:swear:...

TRUE STORY

my son was 2, my jd use to chase a laser pointer, or if u tossed anything around in the room he would go for it in the tank.

So one day i walk by and see my son looking at the tank, Im heading out the door to start the car, soon to be followed by the wife and my son.

We get back 5-6 hrs later and i walk in first, i always would look at my tank as i passed by. I look up and go wow the tank looks different. I walk in, turn on the light and before i can see in the tank i hear swish swish.

Im stepping in 55gs of water.

Near the rock line is a hole about the size of a tip of a pen.

and under the tank is a marble. My son says jack can catch marbles.

Well jack was dry and dead, my tank was toast, and the shop vac went on and on for hours, followed by steam cleaning and cleansing.

Jack was 10, came in at 10 inches, and is missed to this day.

Damn, sounds like it was an awesome fish.

Wow...That would suck...I've been teaching my 2yr old we don't touch the glass, throw things at the glass, hit the glass etc...
The other day I made a stupid mistake and left the door to my bedroom unlocked, Riley (my 2 yr old) got in there/ I was painting the kitchen some more, and realized it was quiet...too quiet, and fear struck me as I realized the bedroom door was open. Go in there, and hes sitting on the floor with a bag, and 2 goldfish are in it with no water, quickly took it away and put them in water. Realized that the 3rd fish was MIA, asked him where it was, he pointed to the 20gal. Sure enough, the lil **** moved a fish barehanded one tank to another.
2 out of 3 fish made it, I had to put one down due to severe internal damage. I have learned. Also kinda impressed that he did all that barehanded, within a 10minute time span.
