I know you said no convicts in your initial post but it beats anything else you can get IMO.

Btw, have you ever had them and witnessed them breed?
good question it is very cool/interesting

Yea its awesome.

Ive had 4 convicts in my 75 gallon for about 3 months now and had them all since fry. The males are now about 3 inches and the females about 2".

About a week ago i noticed a male and female swimming together and protecting a certain area of the tank. The male turned blue and green on his top fins and the females black lines turned blacker than ive ever seen and her orange just pops out so much. They both stand up to anything that tries to get into their territory.

And as of yesterday my other 2 convicts started mating behavior as well!

Dwarf cichlids you could do as well Maybe some German blue rams and bolivians?

IMO a convict only tank would be kinda boring, and i get that. But man when they are spawning they sure are fun to watch in a bigger tank

you could do a pair of angels. 20h or 29h is preferable but people have breed them in 15s even. Or go planted. If you want to have fun with a small tank, that's my advice. Maybe consider lamprologus bricardi (pushing it) or rams too. I am just thinking of things that could stay in 20 for life.

I've had them but they didn't breed, I took them to a lfs with my oscars a few months ago. Idk, how long approx does it take to max in size? I like big convicts but that's how I am with fish and what most people join MFK for. lol If I could grow em fairly quick or buy some larger ones I suppose it could be an option.

Well ive had my males 3-4 months and they have grown from an inch to 3" now. Once they hit 4 inches they usually take long to grow afterwards.

an axolotl can live its whole life in a 20 long :) that's what I'm planning on doing

This would have happened but they're illegal in CA.. and I don't know anyone I can get one from anyway.
