Or at least some measurable mark inside the tank to go by. And preferably not at a weird angle, from a distance, in the dark that someone else told you about.

This is a 75 gallon. 18"?

These are hefty:

Should these guys be kept in 4' tanks? I won't do it again.

Pic 1: 75 gallon is 18" wide (externally)

This is the side view of the tank. (If it was the long view and we can see both sides, then the Oscar would be 45"+ and the lights would be on sideways. If we can't see both sides, then the pic is worthless)

The fish touches neither side internally and has observable space. This makes him observably less than the internal width.

Clearly not close to 18".

Video: Source is a guy who filmed fish apparently at a local Zoo/ public aquarium. He did not net a fish and measure it. He did not have a reference to the aquarium literature of fish keepers to the size. (I read his posts and he was challenged on the size.) It's a visual estimate. Visual estimates are inaccurate which is why no records at fishbase or any world record keeping organizations use them.

Visual estimates at a distance through water of a moving object at an angle with no scalable reference. That is where the 42.5 cm (17") comes from.

okay okay so your saying if i put an oscar in 1 500g 8x4 he's going to be 20" or more? i think this has to do more with genes that anything else

oscars size and tank size have little to no relation at all.. a few years ago my girlfriends mom wanted an oscar tank so i set up a 75 and i found an oscar on craigslist for her... it was 13" overall and grew up in a 30x12x18h 29 gallon. its tail was curled trying to turn around in the tank, and the owner said he changed 5 gallons of water once a month. the oscar had a bad case of hith but it eventually cleared up.

dang 29g for a 13" fish? i feel sorry for that o, but it think most people here agree that a 75g is enough for a 12-13" oscar because lets be honest most oscars only get to that size, but if people wanna put a sigle on in a 180 then they should feel free to
