If you feel comfortable enouff building a w/d than do it just keep in mind that if you do it wrong you could have bad consequences like if you don't have your over flow tunned right a power outage could happen and empty your tank on your floor canisters are good cause there self contained you don't have to worry is it gonna work is my over flow tunned is the return pump to strong or to weak the canister always works and its also easyer to clean just take it out side and hose it down most of the time w/d's are stuck under your tank so clean up can be a pain so basicly if you think you can build a efficient wet dry and tune it right than go for it but if ud wrather have a self contained system that's gurenteed to work out the box go woth the canister
DO NOT TAKE YOUR CANISTER OUTSIDE AND HOSE IT DOWN! If you take all the media out you can hose the chamber, but do not hose the canister itself. This will kill you BB and you will have to re-cycle your tank. W/Ds are much easier to clean, and maintanence, all you do is remove the specific media that needs to be cleaned, or recharged.

haha i think he knows enouff not to spray his bb media down

Another HUGE problem with canisters is that you have to get the siphon started after maintanence. Depending on the filter this can be a chore, to a HUGE PAIN. Fluvals 04 and 05 lines are a huge pain to prime. Eheims are easier, but still not the easiest. With W/D the prime won't be lost by taking media out to clean it.
