200g ply wood build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its all gone a bit boring now! :(

ive varnished what needs to be varnished..

ive made the outward plumbing. waiting till the pump arrives before making the return plumbing...maybe this bit should go on the lessons learned section!!

ive made the overflow box....out of plywood! (the entirety of the inside of the tank will be fibreglassed)

ive made the sections for the sump!

now im waiting for my Ebay purchases to arrive..
1 x 6400ltr pump 3.6mtr head so i reckon i should get about 5k ltrs phas ive only got a head of about 95cm
5 sq mtrs of fibreglass
25kg of resin
500ml of black resin ink
100ml of white resin ink (for the outside that will be on display)
a nice new fibreglass rolling thingy

ive finally decided what ill be doing with the cladding for the frame. cant explain it though..
only thing i can say is that the front panel will be a lift off affair. i cant be dealing with doors. they just get in the way of maintainence.

oh im gonna put some blue LED lights in the sump and have a cut out viewing window... this serves absolutely no purpose..

i was thinking about breeding snails and shrimp for food and also to help keep the sump clean. anybody else seen this done??

oh 1 other thing... i made no plans for this tank! which is why things are getting changed and why i dont have what i need in stock!
now when i build the next 1, i reckon itll take me about 2 days to get to the fibreglassing stage

heres the stocking list in my grow out tank..

1 x polypterus palmas butef....
3 x various plecs
1 x shovel head chiclid
4 x tin foils
1 x firemouth
1 x jack dempsey
1 x green sevrum
1 x convict
1 x sajica chiclid
1 x flier chiclid
2 x kribensis
1 x red jewel chiclid

oh and 6 BIG rocks

i cant decide whether to put substrate in the tank... any ideas??

I already have snails and shrimp in my "sump" :) Offcourse you need substrate, you should use the same as i have, lightbased fine sand, gets the colors of the fish perfectley.

About epoxy, it was a hassle, and i wouldnt go that route again, atleast not alone, maybe 1 layer of fiberglas and epoxy, then liquid rubber all the way afterwards.. Here in Norway we have something names "impermax", maybe you can catch that over in uk aswell? Epoxy is the best way to go offcourse, and your tank is not nearly as big as mine, so i understand if you go that way.. On something as big as i did, its hell!! You have to lay all layers the same day, so they cure together, it was just straight out hell

im lucky (not sure if lucky is the right word) ive got quite a few years experience in using fibreglass so ive gone through that learning curve.

i used to modify cars for a living. i also used to make and repair replica parts for motorbikes... sitting here remembering my first day with fibreglass. this was back in the day before technicians wore disposable gloves. i looked like a fibreglass chicken by the end of the day! and the next......

sand and chiclids... i dunno... they are so messy

you know what i must have speed read over someones post saying about shrimp n snails in a sump. forgot it then gone to bed, dreamed about it, not realised it and then said to myself...hmmm ive just had a good idea!!

keep an eye on your Polypterus. He will probably try to eat the Kribensis and any other smaller cichlids when he gets bigger. They will eat anything that will fit in their mouths. My Endli has eaten 2 clown loaches and a bumblebee catfish. Just something to look out for. Other than that, the stock list looks good. Will they all be going in the 200 or only a select few?

for now...all

all the chiclids (not the kribs) are about 2-3" at the mo.

definate keepers are..as named by the kids...

polypterus (Nickoli)
jack dempsey (Jack)
tin foils (hewy, duey, llewi and pooey)
flier chiclid (ann)
sajica (jade)
sevrum (Nick)
shovel head (kieth)

im quite keen on the jewell chiclid but the others are filler. ill see how it goes.

im keen to swap the plecs for a cat
