lol you live in new zealand.... can you even obtain half these fish??

No. Story of my life.... :(

I'm not sure how the spotted metynnis will go with cardinals once they get bigger, can anyone confirm? Maybe try neons first? Alternately some high bodied tetras like lemons, serpae, rosy etc would look nice.

As for catfish, we don't get anything "large", about your only choice for non-loricariid south american catfish that get bigger than a cory are pictus or chocolate talking cats. A big group of corys would look awesome in that tank though. Maybe a few S. leucosticta [jurupari]?

BTW good on ya signing up here, aside from people recommending rays, piranha, pikes and all sorts of other awesome fish we can't get its a really good site!!

The pike is cool, its name is spike because its back(usually smooth) spikes up in a attack mode.... its instigating in that 2nd picture, but really just doesn't stand a chance against my texas and has gotten pretty cut up in the past... they don't go at it at all really... just try to punk each other once and a while. sorry about quality just snapped them quick

Those are awesome. :D

I know the metynnis can get nippy, but I'd presume they wouldn't bother cardinals. I'll look for confirmation though.

Assuming they survive, I've already got rosies and bleeding hearts whose numbers I'll add to. Trying to keep the number of species as low as possible to look natural. I figure I can probably get away with three types of tetra.

The catfish I've seen in fish shops so far seem to either do almost nothing or swim around frantically all the time, both of which are irritating. What do you recommend for behaviour?

Jurupari would probably be a much safer choice than the spotted metynnises, and much easier to get hold of. The ones you've got look great in your tank.

Tell me about it. :irked:

I've only got one bleeding heart left and I think I'll offer it to a good home once the quarantine's over, rather than restocking them.

Anyone want to recommend some tetras that can keep up with rosies and will look good in blackwater?

Lets see some pictures!! this thing stocked or what??

Can't remember their name but the tetras with the orange/'red color around the eye area and the large black spot on their tail, they look pretty when there's at least a dozen or so. But they're fin nippers, and wouldn't get along with angels or long skirted tetras. And aren't angels territorial when they mature? Not sure if the angel thing would work in there. GL!:)

Can you acquire Apistos in NZ?
I would have a big crazy world of dwarf cichlids.
including A small colony of apistos, maybe cacatoides,
another colony of blue rams,
A large school of tetras (my current fav. is the H. ulreyi)
a large school of pencilfish,
a school of cories, and a pleco or two.
and maybe a pair of dwarf pikes (C. regani),
and a lot more plants!
They all love blackwater, and you would have some very interesting behavior and interactions between the fish.

This would actually be my dream tank.
