20g First SW tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I whole heartedly disagree to the mag thing. Granted, Mag isnt used as heavily as calc and alk, it is needed and should be 3x what your calcium levels are, not to exceed 1400ppm.

If magnesium becomes too low, a majority of the calcium will precipitate into calcium carbonate, and it is steadily depleted by stoney corals as the absorb caclium. I dont believe that frequent water changes will replace Mag once it has become too low because it takes a LOT of it to raise it back up, even in small systems.

You guys can do what you will, but magnesium supplementation is cheap and effective. The only thing you need to keep an eye out for is your salinity after dosing since the supplements are derived from salts.

I have yet to see one legitimate case of mag deficiency in my times of reefing or on other forums.

I think people end up with that by dosing ONLY calcium (a good cal supplement should include mag always)..and that is asking for problems to start with.

These are people who are actually TOO involved, and tinker things before they need to be tinkered. They over tinker, kill ****, and then need something to blame it on. Its always mag.

I have also yet to see any case of cal precipitation due to mag deficiency. I think that you are way more likely to just overshoot calcium levels and have this than the other way around.

lets say mag is definately important. now as far as testing all the time , no.

here is an example. when i started my tank for some reason mag was about 900, couldnt keep calcium levels up. i slowly raised it up to 1350. now i only test about every 3-4 weeks and i only need to dose 2 times a month.

i think as long as u stay above 1000 u should be fine to maintain proper calcium levels.

but i try to keep it steady.

In distance future one I get a hand of saltwater I think I might try a mandarin dragonet. Instead of using carbon in my ac70 should I put live rock in there? Or just add an additional ac70 for refugium?

Well I just got a Mandarin for my 30g and I highly discourage one in a 20g. There will be some issues with one in my 30g because of eating habits. An even smaller tank would be worse. Have a look at the thread I started http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=406539.
From my understanding it is one of the hardest fish to keep, period.

If you want to make your AC70 into a fuge, it's easy. Just make sure you are running a skimmer. I have macro algae and will soon have LR in mine but I was also able to retain a spot to put the sponge filter for mechanical filtration... This was all in the last few days. Check it out. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=406993

Ok, so for mandarin I need to upgrade, np. As for the purple algae, It looks almost as though the rock as a purple dust on it. Is that coraline? Any ID on the snail above?

The light purple/ lavernder color is coralline. You will prob also get some deep red color too as well.

I have read that means my tank is doing well correct?
