Maybe you can answer this Homer but I wonder if people there are as quick to file lawsuits as they are in this country?

Or it could even be thermal shock? Who knows? The mall would have installed heaters along with what was put in the aquarium. Some parts of it may be exposed to the -20C in Shanghai. China has changed much than what most outsiders perceived it to be specially in the 3 biggest cities. The building and construction laws are very strict now.

PS I'm a foreigner living in China for 4.5 years now.
 
There has been a crack in the glass for quite some time now. You could even watch it on a webcam, which is probably where this video came from.

What actually caused the tank to crack, and break apart is simple physics folks - Cold air outside + warm water in the tank = Glass bursting just like a car windshield cracks with the fluctuation of winter temperatures in a city like Denver, Colorado.

Cold = Causes things to restrict, or "shrink" in size. Heat = Causes things to expand - A result of both cold air causing the glass to want to restrict itself on the outside of the tank, and the warm water inside the tank wanting the glass to expand.
 
I just feel bad for the fish that died because of human error. If you're building a 4,000 gallon + (just my estimation based on weight) aquarium. You better make sure it's safe.

That's the + side to lawsuits here. Because they are so prevalent you don't see these issues very often if ever here in the US. Lawsuits curb corruption IMO.
