220 Gallon Full Reef Build Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You should be fine. 12 inch partitions in a standard 48x18 55gallon will have 21.6 gallons worth of room left in it.

sounds good...take a ton of pictures....especially when you are building your 55 gallon...because i also have a 220 that i just resealed a few days ago, and have been pondering on how to do my filtration...but the stock sounds good..
anemones in mind??
and yeah the tank/stand looks sick...
can't wait to see the finished product...

I run a drilled 210 w/ 55 gal drilled sump - 30 total gallons in sump w/ external drive and no check valves - last stage is a 12" wall w/ auto drop float and I've had several blackouts w/ no overflowing water. Only thing I can add is you'd be suprised how much phosphate only a few fish can produce in even large bodies of water. I don't think phospates are as important w/ deepwater and softies as they are w/ stoney corals but sometype of phosphate remover will probably be needed w/ the size of your stock esp. with the several clams you plan. Also be-aware Dwarf angels might nip the mantels of clams ultimately killing them.

Only thing i would change would be personally i would rather a blonde naso over the 3 yellow tangs. and i would want a male blue throat trigger in there.

Thanks for the advice about the phosphates, I will definitely keep an eye out. As far as the dwarf angel, I don't have a dwarf angel on my stocking list.

I do like the Naso Tangs, but the reason for the three yellow tangs is schooling. The main reason for getting the 220 was to have a "School" of tangs. I know 3 isn't a large group, but it's as large as I want to go. I have considered a power blue in place of the regal blue tang, but I have heard of several people that experienced aggression from their powder.

myn was never aggresive he was always a big baby. nice to corals.

Your naso, or are you saying you had a docile powder blue? I haven't heard of anyone with an aggressive naso before. I still may add more fish to the list, I am going to kinda play it by ear as I ad fish. I have never stocked a tank this large and I don't want it to look empty, but at the same time I don't want to over stock. I think it's just one of those things where you can't always plan everything perfectly sometimes you just gotta do it.

If you have had a docile blue powder, might I ask what kind of tank he was in? How large was it when you got it? Did you put him in the tank last? I would love to hear a success story with one, they are IMO the most beautiful tangs out there.

I am undecided on anemones to be honest. I love the thought of a huge rose bubble tip, but then I think about them walking into power heads or stinging SPS. Thanks for the compliments about the tank, I am also excited to see the finished product. I will post as many pics as possible of the sump and I will also let you know how it works for me.
