I know this will seam like a noob question but I have my 240 set up and running for about 3 months and the water hasn't cleared up. I am running 2 XP3 and a XP4. I moved the water from my 120 to the 240 when I was setting it up had a mini cycle another major. The 2 XP3 are my old filters that was on my 120 and they been running for about year. The XP4 is new. I am on a well water not city water. Water is very good had it tested. I have live plants and the lights on a timer.

Things that I have tried:
Turned the lights off for 4 days
Cut back on feeding (girlfriend was way over feeding) I know that was a problem.
Put filter floss in all the filters (helped a little)

Things that I am thinking of trying and need some advice on.

Diatom filer (don't know witch one I will need because of tank size)
Draining the tank and starting over?!?!?

Any help or ideas welcome:)

I forgot. The water is green not the white cloudy from setting up a new tank.

I would try a huge water change. Your filters sound like they should be established, so a big change wont hurt anything:)

Sounds like algae bloom. Nothing a good couple of water changes can't cure ;)

Hi,

You've done very well so far. Bravo.

What's the bio-load like (how many & kind of fish)?

Do you feed the plants?

What is the substate?

Hhmm...Heads Diatom filter and remove everything from water ...Tails UV lamp and take a little longer but kill all floating algae from now on.

Cheapest is WCs and keep problem to a minimum, but won't get rid of it completely.

If your doing the WCs also keep the lights off and cover the tank so light can't get in for 2-3 days and feedings to a minimum for that time.

Keep us posted.. Any pics?

And if all else fails you can try a UV light to kill the free-floating algae.

My bio load is not that bad for the tank size. I have 1 Arow 7", 2 big Tire Track Eel's 16" & 12", 3 Small Fire Eel's 6" for all of them, 4 Peacock Eel's 10" to 12", 6 Snake Skin Gouramis 6", 4 Red Gouramis 4", 3 Clown Loaches 3" and 4 Bushy Nose Pleco's. I do believe in over filtering ;)

My plants are:
Cabomba, Wisteria, Amazon Sword Plant, and Java Fern's. The sub striate is Pure Laterite mixed with pea gravel. No Co2 (just yet) and very little liquid nutrients added.

The biggest problem with doing water changes is that my house is in Lafayette, La. and my work is in New Orleans, La. I have a apt in N.O. and go home on the weekends. My girlfriend is petty good at keeping tanks but she is in collage and doesn't have a lot of time to do water changes on my 240 at night.

Well now that's a problem... Looks like your just going to have to quit N.O. and stay home w/the DGF & the fishes.

You've got a descent bio-load there.

I'd say go with the UV with it's own pump and keep your prefilters cleaned. Then work on the rest as time allows.

You are a candidate for a continuous drip system, would it be posible?

You have a girlfriend that can take care of tanks!!! Glue one of her feet to the floor so she can't leave. Promise to give her a kidney, anything, just keep her happy... :D

KUP,
