240 Gal Aro tank

I find it amusing how people seem to think an extra 6" in wide, or 24" in length somehow equates to this...

Look, we can all agree that 30" would be better, but it's not like the fish is going to die from being in a 24" wide tank. All this "the fish won't be happy" or "the fish will hate you" is just anthropomorphic nonsense. Arguing over whose tiny glass box is slightly larger is pointless. We are all confining our fish to little prisons for our own personal, selfish amusement.

Maybe I can just make a profit by selling my Aro when it gets to the point where it cannot turn in the 24" wide tank ( How much can I sell mine if it gets to that point) LOL and get another one that can turn. thanks guys for all your input. I guess this is Monster Fish keepers after all the bigger , the WIDER the better.

only have one 4 incher in the 40 gallon tank , will add on a larger one when I get the bigger tank when the 4 incher gets to 12. so just leave the 240 gallon with one Aro then?

I was just trying to give you an idea of what a 30" is gonna be like in that 240g tank. There are many that will tell you a silver will do fine even in a 120g tank. Your just gonna have to get as many opinions as you can and try to decide what will be best for you. I can tell you from my experience that two 26-27" silver aros does not work in a 6'x2'x2' tank. Adding just the 2 extra feet in length won't change that IMO.

Silver aros can turn in a diameter about 1/3 their total length, so less then a foot. This has little to do with me suggesting how wide the tank should be.

I had an Arowana in a 260 that was 24" deep. He was given to me 10 years ago at about 12" length. He died a couple months ago for no apparent reason, the other fish were fine and water tested good. Anyway he was 30" when I removed him from the tank and he never had any problem turning around. Certainly a 30" wide tank would be better. How long do they typically live in an aquarium? I'm not sure how old mine was, I would think he must have been at least 3 or 4 years before I got him to have already been 12"?

At 12" it was likely 8-10 moths old. Not sure how long they live but 10 years is a long time:thumbsup:

Until after your little outburst there had been nothing even resembling arguing, just suggestions.

I am surprised with this kind of assumption coming from you.

Interesting, I didn't know how fast they grew as juvi's I guess my friend that gave him to me didn't either. BTW Thats a funny avatar you got. :grinno:

Bderick67, there is plenty of commentary in the previous postings about how "happy" the fish will be in a 30", over a 24", with nothing more than opinion based on ascribing human notions/feeings to a fish. One person said "a fish that will hate you...".

And seriously, for someone with "Sorry for the sarcasm" in their sig, you took that all rather hard lol. That was a tongue-in-cheek comment pointing out how ridiculous our debates over minute differences in tank size are, when compared with what the animal actually lives in. Sorry if I offended, it wasn't directed at you.

Thanks:D

Yeah, putting water quality and feeding aside, the average growth of silver aros is 1-1.5" per month. Most all silvers will be at least 24" by the time they are 2 years old. After that average growth slows to about 1-2" per year.
