when my 14 inch arowana turned around in a 55 their would still be about 2-3inches of space for him. not recommended but my uncle had a black aro in a 55 for 10 years he was stunted but still got to two feet, suprisingly enough he could turn around pretty easy.

Well probably all he could do was swim in circles...Not recommended???rediculous!!!

Bottom line...arows like to cruise at the surface and do so quite gracefully. They glide across the surface. They should have the space to do so. A minimum of 8 foot tank for a semi-happy 20 plus inch plus arow is ideal because it allows them to do just that. Arows are skilled swimmers and can turn easily. I am sorry but anything less than 8' is too small for a large arow of anything near 2' in size...IMO

maybe you should check out that forum. theres a lot of very knowledgeable people on there. so if they are not correct... what makes me think YOU are correct? because you have an aro yourself? you wrote a book? you won some aro competition? you have more than 1 aro? successful comm with 1k fish? you actually spent more than 1k on your aro? many of the people on arofanatics actually have done more than just one of the above. what can you say you have done?

there is no right or wrong answer to this question... its how deep your pockets are is the question that should be asked. everyone has their own preference on tank sizing for what fish, but the main idea is "bigger is better."

Now listen here, I DID state that I am by no way an expert, I even said Im not even a novice. But that doesn't change the fact that an Aro should be keep in a larger tank then a 4x2x2.
I HAVE seen how many asians keep their fish (no offense ment to any asians) and they are grossly OVERSTOCKED, and the way they combat this is with mega filtration and daily waterchanges. Just cause a fish looks good in a aquarium doesn't mean it is in prime heath. Besides Asians look more colourful as they ARE more clolourful then Blacks, Silvers, Jars and Leis.
As for there is no right or wrong anwser, no theres not just stupid anwsers, and although the 4x2x2 will sustain life it is not a good tank to keep a 2ft fish in, you could probably get away with 2x2x2, and, with good filtration and daily waterchanges, the fish will still live and look good but it would be cruel.
I would easily spend over 1k on an Asian Aro BUT they are illegal here and I chose to stay with in the limits of the law, which means it Saratogas or nothing. Just cause you spend lots of money on fish, or have many of a type of fish doesn't make you an expert.

As for the deeper your pockets, it's simple if you cant afford to get an appropriate tank to house a fish, DONT BUY THE FISH, get something smaller.


A good fish keeper will keep fish in the Largest tank possible, NOT the minimum.

i do see your point of view. but simply... if you have the money to spend on a 1k fish. im sure you will have the extra cash for a tank that is bigger than 4x2x2.

actually... they dont do daily water change. majority of them do once a week water change and dont believe in daily water changes.

your comment on if you dont have the money to house a large fish than dont get it. i believe that, but some people just dont care or dont know.

some people just dont have the extra money to house a $25 fish with a $1k aquarium, so they are forced to house in min. tank size. just have to look and turn the other way. nothing you can do about it. its a shame, but at least its not housed in a 50 gallon.

I dont care how many awards someones won or how many books theyve written, i dont believe that a 2' fish can thrive in a 4'-2' tank. but everyones got their own opinion.

is that so? i hope you have passport stamps to prove you have actually been there and seen that in asia they overcrowd the fish. if not, you have no right to say that at all what so ever. if they do overcrowd their fish... then man do their fish still look healthy as heck and way nicer. maybe i should overcrowd my fish... then they would look just as nice.

Why the hell would I need to go to asia to see what has been posted on the stupid freaking site that you keep pushing. excellent comparison Nova, I think the biggest problem is most people have never seen a fish of that size(24")in a 4 foot tank. If they were to see it, then they would realize.

After looking at arofanatics I noticed it is mainly driven by members in asia. There it seems common place to overcrowd small tanks.

AF is actually a good site for aro and some other fishes. good, mannered and very knowledgable people u can talk to.
they dont harrass or flame much like we do here.

u guys are crazy when it comes to aros. you started owning an aro within the past 8 months and you think ur some pro when it comes to arowanas...

a jardini if any needs the widest tank possible out of all the aros for 1 main reason, jardinis can NOT turn around like silvers. if u wanna push for a bigger tank of any species of arowana, it should be the jardini...

silver arowana will be fine for LIFE in any aquarium atleast 2ft wide, and 4-6ft long. half you guys can't even keep them alive for more then 3 years or you get bored of them and sell them off or trade them. its fish keeping, provide it with the best home you can at the time u own it, i promise you half you guys who have aros right now will not have them in a few years. the other half will have there aros living in HUGE tanks where cost isn't an issue.

if you can't not afford a big enough tank, then you can not afford to care for an adult aro, plain and simple. it doesn't hurt to own them and care for them to the best of ur ability. rasing an aro for a few years in a 4x2x2 will be more then enough and way better then some idiotic sob stuffing it in a 40gal tank for 10 years

thanks for the support and advice. i do notice that arofanatics members are a lot more humble and more open minded people. not out there to flame and more to help each other. only pushed to help others who can not afford such a big tank nor have enough space in their house for such a huge tank. also if they really got into the hobby... they would most likely upgrade their tank to a much larger tank... once you get started... you always want to get bigger.

like i said bderick.. maybe you should reread my post. you cant assume people in asia overcrowd their fish just because we in america house fish differently and looking at a few members picture. only way is to ask the fish you house if he is comfortable or not you have your own opinion and i have mine... lets just settle that at that and get over it. i cant change your mind and you wont change my mind. pointless arguement because everyone has their own opinions.

u notice they have "rep points" that can measure how mannered or knowledable some1 is then if ur "rep point" became -10 ull be banned.. and also...
most of the members there are old unlike here, some here started only the hobby for 4-6 years ago and they feel like "they know it all" BUT OF COURSE theres still alot of old schools here that are knowledgable yet humble like Oddball.
