community tanks = much much interesting than a single fish

I am sort of leaning that direction. Especially since I have an established one that is working. Besides, if I see a fish I "have to have" I can't if I have a solo dovii or a pair. I was leaning this way to start, but wanted a second opinion. I can always buy another tank and dovii when things settle down.

I like dovi tanks far more than community tanks...........

I just had the same problem recently, I let my 12" midas male and 9" female go because they did not mate, 2-9" mayan cichlids, and a 6" female flowerhorn. I also had 2-6" female doviis with them. The 135 gallon tank just got too crowded and I decided to go with doviis. I recently got a smaller 5" male and got rid of the other female today. I was surprised to see one of the female and male pair up and she had laid eggs in less than 4 days. I'm pretty excited, but now I have to get a bigger tank in the near future.

I would keep the dovii and find him a mate, I believe you'll end up with world war III in the near future.

If I do end up with the dovii and mate, is there a good chance he won't accept her since he has always been solo? I think the safer route may be the community because many of them have been together for awhile and other than the occasional stare down it is peaceful. This has been the longest running peaceful community I have had.

You might be right with the male dovii accepting a female. I was just like you, I wanted a cichlid community but they are way too aggressive. I started out with a few and I got greedy and kept getting more. Now I just got a community of less aggressive fishes in a smaller 55g tank. Not as much worrying about fishes killing each other. You'll probably end up with a 500 gallon tank if you keep a cichlid community. Remember you started with a 210 and then a 280, it will go on and on. lol.

I see your point, to a point. I had the 210 and 240 at the same time. I sold the 210 because I had to. The 240 already was a community that was peaceful with most of the fish at or close to full grown sizes. Keeping peaceful cichlid communities in an 8 ft tank is not that hard.

It sounds like you have already made up your mind. If it works for you and the fishes are healthy, go for the community. Your Dovii sure looks nice and I hope you don't miss him too much. One hundred dollars is a lot of money.
