28 gallon bowfront tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't put anacharis in your tank as is is a rooted plant. Mbuna will dig it up and it will constantly be floating around the tank. Java moss and java fern may work better as they should be tied to a rock or piece of wood. I am not sure if the fish will pick on them or not. Anubias is a plant that I've had good luck with. None of these really require CO2 though and unless you are using very bright lights, the CO2 will not have a noticeable effect on plant growth. Also, be careful with it as it will drop the pH of your water through formation of carbonic acid. To be honest, I've never heard of anyone dosing CO2 in an African tank.

Yellow labs may be ok for a bit (I've had a group in a 29 for a while - don't tell anyone, lol), but you will need to move them up to something bigger than your 26 eventually (40B or 55). Personally, I'd go with dwarf peacocks or better yet, some smaller Tangs for that tank. Smaller Julidochromis or Neolamproogus would be nice. While not as colorful, they are every bit (if not more) entertaining than mbuna in a small setup.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I will consider those fish as well, but I probably will get something that I can get locally (pet store 10 mins away)

Could I get 2 yellow labs and 2 red zebras (1-2") or should I just get 4 yellow labs or 4 red zebras? I heard they do better in groups. Or can I get 4 yellow labs and 4 red zebras or is that too overstocked.
(keep in mind I am getting a larger tank in future)

I finally got my play sand, The pool filter sand was too expensive so I did not get that. The play sand I got is supposed to be already washed but I still washed it in a bucket for 5 minutes. Then I just dumped it all at once into my tank and it all sunk down to the bottom in about 7 seconds leaving my water crystal clear. I am very happy with this sand, it looks great.
I will post pics on Monday maybe tomorrow because I have too much homework and shouldn't even be on here hahahha:D

Finally got all the sand and rocks in place. I will post pics tomorrow. This sand is so good, it's very soft and has very small grains. It also requires no cleaning if you put it in right. I cleaned it for bit then decided to just put it directly in. All you have to do is put it in a cup, move the cup to the bottom and pour it out. It's great.

I picked up a heater (56% off :D) some more water conditioner and some plants. I got this plant that I thought was anubias but now that I look at it I don't know what it is lol. I also got some other unknown plant and some free "scrap" plants.
I am a huge noob at planting so please give me some advice on where to put them.

Also the water is kinda cloudy because I tried just dumping the sand instead of carefully putting it in.

Looking good!
