29 gallon wet pet cichlid ideas

No luck with the nanolutea. There are some 1 inch nannacara anomala available on wetspot which would be great. One thing that concerns me about getting the nannacara is that where I am in NJ we have fairly hard water. Would this be bad news for the nannacara?
I'm in north NJ as well, our water is better for the CA cichlids. If you think you could get them something bigger down the road in say 6 or 8 months, you could probably grow out a group of convict relatives, buy them small at 1"ish and have some time in a 29. TUIC has some, and there are also a couple of LFS's on route 46 in clifton, since you are in north NJ, that both have good cichlid selections, you might have luck there. But if you want a fish that can live for years in the 29 gallon, I would look to some other smaller fish.
If you really wanted the south american dwarfs, you could get an RO filter. They make some pretty small cheap ones that will get your water suitable for a SA setup, with some additive for minerals, I have used this in the past to keep planted tanks in our water.

Yea I’ll wait it out for now. I might just try and find a 40 gallon which will give me a lot more options. I’ll post any updates on this forum though.

You're in my area. We have a ridiculous concentration of quality lfs here. Global fish co, absolutely fish, TUIC, even fish hut of NJ. All viable options, you can get whatever fish you want around here.
I’ve only ever been to Absolutely Fish out of those. It’s actually where I got my Carpintis. Definitely going to have to check those other fish stores. Thanks?

Little bit of an update on the thread. After a good college semester my parents said I'm all good to start setting up the 29. I've fallen in love with the platinum convict and I plan on growing one from a small size. I love how they look like miniature Midas cichlids, a fish I'd love to keep in the future. Many people also say they have a pretty good "wet pet" personality. So the plan as of right now is to get the tank cycled and ready. I have a Marineland Magniflow 220 from my Carpintis tank which I replaced with an fx4. I also have a spare Marineland Penguin 200 which I can always add on as well. Does anyone know how to tell the difference between male and female platinum cons at a small size? Regular convicts are much easier. My initial plan was to go to the Lfs and pick out whichever one seemed dominant and just kind of hope it's a male.
