Is there a reason so many people dont use 4x4's to build tank stands?

Instead they nail 2x4's together.

Just wondering why more people dont use 4x4's to build their tank stands.
I know they are more expensive, but you're still saving heaps of $ compared to buying a premade stand and it would be a lot beafier too.

i used 4x4's just for more stability, then by useing 2x4's and doubling up on to make a 4x4. But, i use 2x4's for the center braces.

i would say its overkill, and makes the stand really heavy. id say 110% of DIY stands are overbuilt as it is. even doubling up the 2x4s is overkill IMO...

I agree with J Cardona. However, if you do need a 4 X 4 sized post, it's better to use two 2 X 4's bolted together because it reduces the possibility of the post twisting over time.

here's the one i built for my 210g. i think its waaaaaaay overbuilt, and thats only using 2x4s. and it weighs more than a small car :D

premade stands are made of plywood, usually...don't waste your money on 4x4s.

Oh man!!! That thing is SEXY!!

Thats what i'm talking about.

I want STURDY. I want overkill. I want a stand that will hold up a VW Bus.

I live in earthquake country and the particle board POS i have now sends shivers down my spine when we have earthqaukes.

I dont have a problem with a 2000 lb stand. The sturdier and heavier, the better.
BWAA HAHAHA

plywood on its edge is ridiculously strong. You can could build a stand capable of supporting a a mack truck out of just plywood...

but still, i like a little 2x4 action in there anyway :)

lots of 2x4s will work, but if you want the warm n fuzzies, then some 4x4 posts will do the trick :)
