4X's are harder to get untreated also. i work at lowes and the only way we can get untreated 4x's is to special order them from a mill.
quick question...why is treated wood such a no no?

lots of 2x4s will work, but if you want the warm n fuzzies, then some 4x4 posts will do the trick :)

its not, most people just dont want to build a stand out of treated.
if you dont mind me asking..why not? is treated harder to work with or something? i know nothing about wood or building. my project that i'll be starting (hopefully by new years) will be a DIY thread of epic proportions, due to a) no knowledge b) no money c) no tools. that's right. I dont even have a saw...it's gonna be the best (worst) DIY thread ever :)

stay tuned for my rediculously over built earthquake resistant Hulk of a tank stand DIY thread soon.

You also have to consider the cost of the materials, but more importantly the level of difficulty to work with. Its a heck of a lot easier cutting 2x4 down.

my father in law has a whole woodworking shop in his garage. he's going to help.

he's already told me i'm crazy and i aggree with him. But he'll help anyways.

must be nice. my father in law has a whole woodworking shop too, and he's the biggest jerk on the planet. asking him for help is almost not even an option because he's always in such a bad mood. and i'm his favorite son in law!
