3 Convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see 2 maybe even three females. Hard to tell with the little one but I think I see a little orange there.

sweet so there's no mating pair...so do I still have to get rid of the small one or will he get over his pale shyness when he gets bigger? I have 6 more tiger barbs I can throw in there to make things a bit different....I could add 3 males?? lol

honestly though, if this was your tank, what would you do? Keep in mind I have driftwood coming in very soon so the PVC and fake plants will not be permanent. I plan on live plants and drift wood. I want to find some rocks to make caves...pvc works for now but its sort of cheesy

If they only chase her around a certain territory try removing them and rearranging the plants/pvc. Introduce the little one first then the others after he gets his bearings.

uhh...so i'll play this big fish confusion game when the driftwood comes in. after i boil the water and get it ready for the tank, i'll remove the fish and everything in the tank, clean it out real nice...put in the wood and scenery i choose, put in the small convict...wait like an hour ... put in the other 2 convicts...see how it works out. So adding a male or anything would pretty much just make things worse?

If the male is big enough he'll mate with the largest female which will make aggression much worse. If the male is too small he'll get the same treatment as the small female.

I highly doubt you'll be able to keep live plants with Cons. They love to dig, etc. I'd stick with rock caves and such.

Ok cool

I agree, 3 females is most likely what you have there.

I would also agree that plants will probably get dug up. Once convicts hit maturity they like to move the substrate as they see fit.

You shouldn't run into too much aggression problems with 3 females, once the smaller one gets to be a close to the same size as the other two. With that being said if one of them decides to drop a clucth of eggs, she may get testy for a bit.

If you want a male, go to the LFS and look for one that is the closer to the size of the larger two females you have, but has NO orange on its side. It may also look a little "taller" than the others. Look for its top and bottom fins to extend to the same length or past its tail fin, it will most likely be a male.

A bit of warning, a pair of convicts may lay claim over the entire tank. The pair in my 55 gallon push the smaller female tankmate all the way into the corner. Convicts are almost as famous for being agressive while spawning as they are for being prolific breeders.

hope this helps.
