3 month old motoro just purchased. Will not eat.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just looked up your tank size, rounded up 50g tank.
having a motoro in there? seriously?

you must not have read up the stickies and done your research. no wonder the rays have died. poor things.

I don't think 10 gallons of dirty water will do her, it will help but it's better if u stock ur tank with sum fish and let them cycle the tank. Now Wat ur tring to do is seed ur filter with postive bacteria to filter out the ammonia and nitrites outta the tAnk water
,that ur fish produce when feeding and there bio. The by product of the bacteria feeding on the ammonia and nitrites is nitrates. So I recommend u by test kits and test ur water day by day and If u do see reading at all change ur water and add some stability to take the stress off the fish. Did u change ur water when u noticed the ray acting up?

Srry typo "I think 10 gallons of water Will NOT do her"

Great sound advice from these ray keepers. I totally understand your love for all things aquatic.....however because you love them so much you want to do what is right for them right? You are stressing about the money to get a 180 gallon when in all actuality you even need a bigger tank than that for a motoro. You are wanting to shoot for a 5+ turnover rate per hour. Rays are not cheap animals to keep not by a long shot. And when you are looking at getting your new ray if at all possible try and get a captive bred ray they will be much hardier from the get go generally. I hope we don't all scare you away from rays but I do hope that you will come to the understanding that rays require ALOT! Huge tanks, religious waterchange schedule if you don't have an auto changer, a TON of good quality food, filtration out the wazoo, and alot of time and patience. In the end are they worth it?? Oh Hell Yeah!! but first you must commit and be comfortable with the huge financial burden of being owned by one of these wonderful creatures. So if you were to ask me what I thought you would need for a motoro ray my answer would be.....300+ gallon tank, large sump or awesome canister filters, all sand or barebottom for substrate, access to black worms if needed, and alot of spare time on your hands to devote to your new pet. Are you able to do all of those things? If so go for it, if not I say wait! Just my .02

Go to the craigslist.org website; you can find there tanks for a very good price. The big tanks !

Go to MFK Martket Place, and maybe somebody near you have tank for sale for much better price than you can find in local store.

And the most important - be patient, read a lot about cycle tank and remember that you need a minimum 4 weeks to have proper water in new aquarium (mine took 6-7 weeks).

Buy a water test!

Good Luck !

Im sorry but if you are worried about money and buying a tank and don't know anything about the nitrogen cycle or how to cycle a tank or practically anything, then you dont need to keep a ray, and possibly not a reg. fish. You need to read read read! study and research all the stickies on this forum, not just the ray stickies, but all about filtration and tank sizes... honestly a motoro will be OK in a 180gal for about 1.5 yr max. then you will need a bigger tank again. IF your really hard on for a ray, then save the money and buy the tank 1st, take the time to research all the criteria needed to having a stable filtration system, and triple up on your filtration. i have a 280 gal tank, and run enough bio filtration for a 500gal aquarium maybe more... and you WANT turnover, which is how many time an hour the tank water runs through the filter.... more is better, i run a 4800gph pump in my filter to keep the water moving quickly.

but seriously man.... a tank that is barely 50gals is the WORST tank for a ray. you would have to do a water change once a day mayabe more...

please do yourself or should i say, SAVE yourself the heartache and the waste of money and do NOT buy another ray until you have done all of the above
