I agree. I would say 100% the one is male and the other a female. The other I am not as sure as it could be a submisive male. Freshwaterpredators sounds like he has it down. The females are keeping up on the growth rate....that is surprising.

Yeah im very surprised as well with the females keeping up in the growing process. There is one female in the tank right now thats dominanting the most of the area and maybe thats why is she growing the fastest. If that continues i will just split the 4 into 2 tanks sooner than later. The 2 females look exactly a like and the 2 males look exactly a like so i might have a double pair.

I have always had to take out the rest once there is a dominate male and a female. Around the 3" mark....otherwise the rest just get beat on relentlessly, if they do not kill them.

Couple new pics....they eat live savages. None stop. Growing quickly. There are 4 all together. Pic 1 is male number 1. Pic 2 is female number 1. Pic 4 and 6 is male number 2 and Pic 7 is female number 2. Enjoy.

As everyone knows i bought 4 juvenile dovii's. i have come to a conclusion that i lucked out and ended up with 2 male and 2 female. Today i woke to a pair guarding eggs. Mind you i have had them less than a month and got them at 2 to 2.5 ". they are about 3 to 3.5 half inches.

Is there any special treatment i need to do to ensure these babies survive. i have split the tank in 2 with the couple with eggs on one side and the other 2 on the other side (which are starting to form a pair themselves). How long to i keep the fry in the tank because there is only one or 2 white eggs and the rest look healthy and fertalized meaning i should have some hatch in a few days. There is only about 30 eggs are they are still a young mother and father but i am super excited to see what happens. Any suggestions would be great. thanks

still to young to tell. most cichlids will look like females when young. that is because cichlids can change sex accordingly. some times a submissive male will turn into a female and vice versa.

This is true, but only at a very small size. Prabably 1-2" max. This is VERY uncommon though. Many people will argue differently.... but I stick to this philosiphy.;)

Great congratulations. I would divide tank. I normally keep fry with parents for 6weeks unless I plan on using them for feeders then the sooner the better. Dovii fry are very fast at an inch and most cichlids can't catch them for feeders that's why smaller better. And there isn't anything you need to do about babies. Dovii are great parents and will do a Great job.
