30,000 gal pond algae problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
UV will be your best friend - 3x65W lamps ($1500),replace lamps every year($300);then perhaps 15 lb of barley straw ($100),replace every 6 months : then chemicals($$$-dont like it): sodium bicarbonate to raise alkalinity above 100 PPM - ( some of your plants might not like it)or frequent water changes(500g a day) - all that works for me.

No UV.... just more plants.

dude uvs are used by almost every pondscaper(if thats the term for a pond maintenance person/keeper/builder/installer). plants are good but all that algae prevents light getting to the depths.

That the whole point of the plants....no nutrients, no algae....

And the point of a UV is to kill the free floating algae now, rather than experimenting to get the correct amount of plants to offset the excess nutrients (with potted plants it can take several seasons to get the correct balance with seasonal changes and bio-loads). Gravel without proper circulation and maintenance can cause stratification of the water column with anaerobic bacteria and offgassing problems.

Only UV that could possibly be considered a waste is an underrated one.

Natural ponds (using plants to reduce excess nutrition) will always have some algae (it's just not seen as well in a pond as it would be in a tank).

Higher filtration rates with more complete filtration will be a plus here.

Water hyacinth and cattails all thru the waterfall and any other circulation areas will show the most benefit.

I have a 10,000 gal pond. Did it all over the years - tons of plants, no plants, micro fiber filters, triple the volume filters, plants in the filters. Bought a UV and my pond is now crystal clear. They also need not be unsightly. Those fake rocks look pretty good and come in sizes big enough to cover the largest UV setup. I know.

you can even have ur uv undrgound, how? dig a hole(derrr) near the pre existing filtration or if u dont filter then a place where pipes can be hidden(and pump). dig all the trenches . add piping. hide a cord from the pump to source of power. then cover up the tranches with dirt and put lawn back on, then put an upside down bozx with necassery holes for plumbing and put it over uv then cover with dirt and put lawn back over!!!. thats how i would do mine

Chesterfield do you have pics.?
