Yes there is muck, every pond has it in the spring reguardless of the fall clean-up. quote]

oh do i know it?...
the first fall the fence, i put around the pond, pretty much failed:( (before i put up the small wall that lines the driveway) and i would clean it every day after work until it became to much... Last summer i made myself a net out of heavy duty netting and 1 1/2 pvc pipe (20" wide, 12"tall with a 15' reach{the net was pretty much the size of a 30gal trash bag}) and dredged the bottom. and let me tell you i was shocked that each pull-up there had to be 50-75lb of muck... i coundn't even lift it out of the water, i had to drag it over the rocks... i had the worst back pain ever(seriously). plus i tried to use a old pool pump:screwy: to siphon the bottom, but that was nearly impossable, since pool pumps need to be below water level and it kept clogging...

i just read this off this site http://plants.ifas.ufl.edu/hyacin2.html

This South American native was introduced into Florida in the 1880s. Its growth rate is among the highest of any plant known: hyacinth populations can double in as little as 12 days. Besides blocking boat traffic and preventing swimming and fishing, water hyacinth infestations also prevent sunlight and oxygen from getting into the water. Decaying plant matter also reduces oxygen in the water. Thus, water hyacinth infestations reduce fisheries, shade out submersed plants, crowd out emersed plants, and reduce biological diversity.

is this a good thing or bad?:nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly:

In the way that quotes means it, hyacinth plugs up waterways and prevents the normal flow (and oxygenation) of water. In a pond, hyacinth is almost nothing but beneficial.

Hyacinth and UV will be your saviours........ I wouldn't have a pond without both.

there is one thing i still don't get... how can the pond be covered with over 8" of ice which was covered with several inches of snow and still have live algae:eek:? there is no way light was getting threw.

no joke! just watched a show on history channel where they went under the ice in the NORTH where its NEVER been uncovered or even thawed:eek: and there was algae thriving! it was everywhere :D;)

doug

P.s the ice was 11feet thick before hitting open water!
