i have 14 to 6" in a 125 with various other fish including plecs gouramies and an acara running an external filter. took water to be tested BEFORE my weekly 30% change...nitrates less than 5!

How many fish would you say you have in the 125? all together including all types of fish with your 6" Clowns?

What kind of filter are you using? and how many filters?

Hey Cliff,
I'm not saying it can't be done, but I would just start slow and don't add all the fish at once. A 180 gallon is really not very big, and 35 5" clown loaches lined up tail to tail would be over two times the length of that tank, that's just not a lot of room. I also suggest the additional sponge filters, and to have a decent amount of live plants if you can, which will also help with your nitrates.

Ultimately, you could just end up with stunted clowns.

Agreed, unless there are some variables like chemical media or a lot of live plants... my 125 gallon has five 6" clowns, three 7" elephant noses, one 5" BGK, and a 9" fire eel... with weekly 50% water changes (sometimes even more) I am still getting a 10 nitrate reading before doing a water change. No nitrates out tap, with an FX5 and two big sponge filters. 0A 0NI

hmmm i was suprised also, maybe i will get it tested again somewhere else. it was a liquid test at my lfs. is there anyway a test can under read? i watched him conduct the test and all appeared good.
Im running an external canister rated at 1400lph and a small internal i keep in there in case i need to set up a q tank.
complete stock list:
1 5" angel
14 clown loach 8 between 3" and 6" the remainder being about 2" all fish appear to be growing!
2 common plecs 6" and 8"
2 4" gouramies
1 african lung 16"
1 blue acara 4"
1 bristlenose 4"
1 frontosa 2"
1 platy 2"
Am i overstocked?
is starting to look a bit crowded, in the process of obtaining a 6x2x2 for the clown posse and hopefully some dats

heres my tank a couple of months ago.
also how is nitrate measured? is it mg/l or ppm?

nitrates measured in 'ppm' and yah AQAdvisor would probably tell you that you are over stocked. =P

Anyway I probably should jsut be happy with what I have right now and thats 9 loaches. I think if i ever come upon oddball patterned loaches then I'll add one here and there to bump it up a few and that would be it. I mean I might have enough time right now in my life to do up to 3 WC's a week? but who knows whats going to happen in 5 years time when the nitrate levels rise faster than I can do WC's.

Definately it will happen! when I move into a house the first thing I'm gonna do is build a 10 x 3 x 2 tank. Then i'm gonna do the whole shebang 200+ loaches!
