As far as the heat pads, they're fine to use on their own without a heat lamp. For snakes belly heat for digestion is more important anyway.
I have kept snake for years and hate feeding in a seperate container.Snakes can smell the difference between you hand and a mouse. Also you run risks of the snake regurging when you put them back in the cage. If you afraid of the snake bitting you just put gloves on when you get him out.

Just a seperate opinion.
