30" Tall Tank Good or Bad?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Before you make your decision, bear in mind that the substrate will further reduce the viewing area . I have a 30" tall, bare-bottom acrylic tank and for me, the only issues are siphoning debris off the bottom and occassionally removing biofilm (scum) from inside the tank. For siphoning, it's easy to build a device from a four-foot section of PVC pipe. I bought a a microfiber pad attached to a telescoping handle from Target which I use to clean the tank interior. I have large Dats in my tank and they seem equally comfortable hanging out near the bottom, so oxygenation does not appear to be an issue. I also have a 30" tall 150g glass tank and I just have never found them to be particulalry challenging to maintain.

I've got 3 30" tall tanks, and I love them:)
They're a pain to get algae off of the bottom, but a good mag float takes care of that.
With a long python tube gravel vacs are a cinch.

Well I wasn't only worried about cleaning. I'm also worried about the weight of the tanks. An 8' tank would be hella heavy at 30" It would be tough if I ever had to move it. I'm thinking about changing my 300 gallon tall order to a 240 before it's to late.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! :)

this is MonsterFishKeepers. not NanoFishKeepers :)

unless you are seriously moving around alot, don't worry about the weight of the empty tank. you probably won't be moving it very often, if at all

ive got a 25tall... its great for a cherryshrimp tank.... not a big fan of "tall" tanks in general though...

If your gonna change, go with the 300 wide 96x30x24" the extra width will give you alot more options for stocking.

I would have done that in a heart beat. The problem is that it wont fit through the door in my bedroom.
