300 gal FOWLR

Nonstophoops : Thank you. This is what i was trying to explain (with links to it already written). I only have a 20 gallon reef, but have a 3-4" sand bed. My nitrates are always 0, but I still do 15% weekly water changes. I plan on using this 20 as the sump/refugium to my next tank. I will probably add a few more inches of sand, once I make the change.

Thanks again.

the sand itself is aragonite, calcium carbonite. I have his sand, and it isnt really that dirty, buy you will likely find a few random little things like small clam shells

so i got the sand today. Its very dense and i dont see any chunks of argonite in it will it work?

Thanks

It is aragonite, you don't want any chunks. I don't think you should put quite that much in. Do 120 pounds. Anything more is just going to trap more stuff.

You can put it all in if you want and it will work.

Whether or not your sand has crap in it, you want to wash it...you have silicates in the sand for sure, and you want to wash as much of that silicate dust out of your sand as possible.

In aragonite? There shouldn't be any silicates in it, right?

I have seen many diatom blooms on the surface of aragonite sand beds that havent been washed. Hence I recommend it.

I have found all sorts of things in substrate that was "clean".

Even caribsea, whom I recommend, gave me chucnks of wood in my aragonite. Reefgrade aragonite. So who knows whats in the other stuff. :D
