whatever the size of your pump output is I would match that. I’m running 1-1/2” returns on each side of the tank with dcp-15000 pumps. The larger the output the less head pressure you will have and more gph will be achieved. You will have plenty of flow , and If you use 2 street 45s you can direct flow wherever you need.
OK, I managed an hour or two at home today. The back of the nozzle where the water enters is 1.25" in diameter.
The water exits the nozzle through a dome shaped opening with a base of 5/8" and is 7/16" at the highest point. This restricted flow results in the venturi effect. Notice all the slots above the opening that contribute to the aeration.
The whole nozzle can spin around 360 degrees so the flow can be directed where you want it to go.
For my returns I'm going through the top of the tank because I'm adding a 3d background.
If I were to use this nozzle is there a certain positioning or angles you think works best as far as V slits drawing water from above or below or does it not matter and you just point the stream wherever you want it to go? I think I would need to go straight down to a 45 or a 90 then attached this nozzle. I'm not sure I would have the space to go straight down to the nozzle because of how close the return holes are to the edge of the tank, maybe but if I do it's going to be darn close to touching the side of my tank.
I had thought about trying a 1" random flow generator as well but my gph I'm aiming for exceeds the suggested range by a bit.
This tank is similar to my tank, except that my return hole is adjacent to the overflow box.
Here's mine. The return pipe is on the left. It comes out of the overflow box and then down into the tank. It is only slightly submerged and just below the height of the weir.
I like these nozzles so well, we'll be using them in the big tank system. All pipes coming down through the top of the tank. Only decoration in the tank will be the plumbing.

I'm trying to find anything about optimum gph or anything and I can't. Do you know if there's an optimum gph range like there is with random flow generators? Or back pressure amount based on how much you're trying to pump through it?
I can't help you with that. It's basically a pool/spa return nozzle. We were introduced to it by a man who sets up and maintains salt water and reef tanks for businesses. He actually sold us everything for our mechanical filtration system (which is a spa filter system) The reef guys are light years ahead of us fresh water people (they came up with Herbie/Bean Animal, etc.) The RTL filters we use are usually found on big reef systems. I only know of one other MFK member who uses them.
I guess what I'm trying to convey, is just because it's a spa part, that doesn't negate using in a fresh water tank. If reef people use it, I can too You will probably only find them in a pool supply store like this or Amazon:
