Well, to his credit, I think JakeH might have a point in that the tank MAY not have fully cycled? His manner might have been a bit uncouth, but I see his point. I remember reading through this thread but don't remember details on the filter. I also remember that the fish seemed to have been transferred as a group?

A new pond + fish dying = usually means a problem with the cycling especially if it is a start up cycle. Just because someone has the means and the will to build a 3k doesn't mean he knows everything about fish keeping. I know when I started my 1k pond, I knew practically nothing and learned a lot along the way.

Diego, perhaps it would be good for the community if you would give us an idea on why you think the fish died? What happened in that one week that you were away that led to them dying? I mean, if your household help overfed them leading to a spike in ammonia, a working filtration system should have taken cared of that, albeit getting it overworked a bit. If it was just the ray, it would be a no brainer that the water parameters might have been off. But for an aro to die, it seems more complicated OR that the parameters are thru the roof.

I also noted that when some of your fish died, you literally "cleaned" the tank?

Doesn't that make it worse since your tank will recycle again? Not unless there was a problem with parasites...

Also, your reply to that guy worries me also in that it is not the water or the chemicals or the aging water that we are all worried about, it is the stability of your nitrogen cycle and the robustness of your biological filtration. I've been keeping fish far longer than you brother and trust me, I'll be the first to admit, my knowledge is at best just a notch above a noob. Hehe

I remember seeing that he had 4 fx5 and some media packed into the waterfall but that hardly seems sufficient for such a large tank. Maybe I am wrong but if I had a tank of that magnitude, there would be several massive wet dries on top of what you already have. and even then I would only keep feeder fish in the tank for at least 2 weeks while I wait for the bacteria to build up on the biological filtration.

Don't get me wrong, this is a beautiful tank but I think that the filtration was designed poorly.

thanks for your concern my friends. my aro was kinda beat up dunno know by whom since i was outta town. and the ray just died suddenly... my other fish are doing great all off them. i added a couple of days ago a LSN he is 4" i've been keeping him since he was 2"

Bro, if I were to suggest with all humility. I recommend that you get the ray out of there and put him in an established tank. Get some bacterial in a bottle to help with the cycle and WC every other day. I also suggest that you STOP adding new fish until you are certain that your tank has fully cycled.

But then again, what do I know...

It'd be interesting to see what the filtration is like on this tank. True, it's a beatiful tank build, but I think that some aspects were a little under-planned and some important steps were rushed.

I say slow it down for a bit and establish what's wrong. Once everything is 100%, then carry on.

It is a beautiful set up and I can see where it would be extremely hard to restrain myself from stocking to soon.

I bet if we were all honest about it at one time or another we stocked to soon.

Let me say again that I was corrected by Diego & that I now have no doubts about his abilities as a experienced fishkeeper. I jumped to a conclusion & no matter how reasonable that conclusion, I was wrong. His water is aged & he has more like 14 FX-5's on there if I remember right... The timeline & the constant stocking are misleading, but keep in mind this is an open-top outdoor tank & there's a lot more that can go wrong. And again, I wish him nothing but success with this tank. Keep us updated, Diego!

Bro, I can have 100 FX whatevers but a filter is just a filter, the magic is in the filter media and the time it is given to mature and fully cycle.

That is why I bulleted the timelines as per the updates of Diego, for him to validate them.
