Hey guys(girls), i'm new here....just wanted to say hello, and it's a GREAT site!

Anyways, I can't decide wether to get a 300 gallon tall (96x24x31) or a 300 gallon wide (96x30x25), from glass cages.

Right now i'm really leaning toward the wide, simply because I can see no real advantages of the taller tank. Also, I know that a wider tank allows you to keep a longer fish (which is by all means a GOOD thing).

I just wanted to ask you good people what advantages the tall tank had over the wide tank (or just any advantages at all...).

Oh, and how much would this etup weigh, total? It's going to have ~250lbs worth of substrate, and probably 150lbs of rock and driftwood. I've just forgotten the weight of water :(

Thanks,

Wide it is! :D Thanks.

One more question.....is metal halide lighting worth its price?

I mean, for that 300g i'm getting, it would be $1,500 (2 full 48" fixtures)!!

I COULD get it...but if it's not really, REALLY beneficial....then i'll go with the cheaper alternative.

Thanks again!

Well, I MIGHT plant...but I probably really shouldn't. There will be some massive, not so friendly/gentle fish going in there.

I think i'll pass on the metal halides, I can get 1.7wpg with 2 standard 48" fixtures (with 4-65 watt lamps each), and come up to $432 instead of $1,500. I don't think I would even NEARLY need the 4.6wpg provided by the metal halide fixtures....even if I do atempt to plant it, it won't be with any high light plants.

rallysman, you have a 505g tank!?! That's really, extremely large. Love the avatar by the way...but it needs more cowbell.

It'll be a couple months before I have the foundation ready for the tank (have to rip up the floor, por concrete foundation, etc.), but i'll let you know how I like it rayman. Though I think the answer is already very obvious...
