Well, I MIGHT plant...but I probably really shouldn't. There will be some massive, not so friendly/gentle fish going in there.

I think i'll pass on the metal halides, I can get 1.7wpg with 2 standard 48" fixtures (with 4-65 watt lamps each), and come up to $432 instead of $1,500. I don't think I would even NEARLY need the 4.6wpg provided by the metal halide fixtures....even if I do atempt to plant it, it won't be with any high light plants.

rallysman, you have a 505g tank!?! That's really, extremely large. Love the avatar by the way...but it needs more cowbell.

It'll be a couple months before I have the foundation ready for the tank (have to rip up the floor, por concrete foundation, etc.), but i'll let you know how I like it rayman. Though I think the answer is already very obvious...

I wish it was 505..... i gave the outside dimensions.....unfotunately its closer to 300......like i said, the measurments were aproximate! lol/

Ok, I think i've got it all worked out.

My dad and I will build the stand and canopy (~$400), then we'll go pickup the tank ($850), then decide on a substrate and how much i'll need ($30-260), then run out and pickup all my water filtration/aeration/movement needs (~$800), finally i'll get my lighting which will be two 48" 8-bulb fixtures ($400).

So unless i'm forgetting something, the final price should be around $2,700 (tax not included, so....)

Which is alot less than I thought it would be actually....

The only advantage to a taller tank is for building biotope type tanks and for large numbers of small fish. Wide tanks mean you can keep larger fish and you get a better gas exchange, given a choice go with the wide.

Wide is good - better for the fish

Why dont more people look at other options for MH lighting? The Aquarium specific lighting is an absolute rip off!! I'm building a hood for my new tan k and picked up 2 x 150W MH shop light fittings with ballasts and globes for AU$60 the lot.

There are heaps of metal halide lights around that are used for hydroponics that are a lot cheaper than aquarium specific lighting and its basically the same thing, if your building your own hood then it doesnt matter where the lighting came from as long as you can build it in. At my LFS they try and sell second hand crappy MH ballasts without lamp fittings etc for crazy prices - search the net for the same stuff but from hydroponic suppliers and you can get it for less than half the price!
