300ish Gallon plywood - First attempt

I have some bulk fine mesh thats used to make the fish nets. The green scoop types. I was thinking of using that or looking for something black to cover it so my drains would be near invisible with my dark background.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. You could add the all the way drain valve. Have them all in line with T's and you would have minimal plumbing and a simple system. I'm gonna mock this up tomorrow. I like this idea.

Code:
______
| O | <---- overflow level
| |
| O | <--- Water change level
| |
|_____|
Thoughts?

Hope my little drawing works.

My only reason for liking RiverMud's design is fewer holes, fewer chances for a leak...

Hmm, I like both Rivermuds and Muni ideas for draining/water changes. So much so that I think I'm going to use a combination of the ideas for my build.

Muni I think whichever way you choose to do it would work well. The only concern with your way that I have, is making sure all of the bulkheads are sealed and stay sealed for the duration of the tanks life. I'm sure you're like everyone else in that you hate to take down a tank to fix something that should have worked the first time... Can't tell you how many times I've done that. :irked:

Edit: Random though, but I just realized that we are in the same state. I'm up north in the San Juans.

The reasoning behind the design of mine is as follows:

Witht eh overflow drilled at the lowest point in your tank you can control the depth of the water with your plumbing. Drilling extra holes may at first seem to make sense by keeping the system separate but it is actually not cost effective. The plumbing required for multiple holes costs a lot more than the plumbing for a single overflow system.

I also chose to do it this way because I run off of well water. I don't need to worry about chlorine etc. You can just as easily manually refill the tank if you have issues with water temp and chlorine. I just personally like having everything outside of the tank.. I don't like looking at plumbing.

The one I have has only one hole.

The tee join is set verticlly.

On the down end is a valve leading to an adapter for a hose coupling. So to drain 1/3rd attach hose sling it out the window and open the valve.

On the up end the piping runs up to the desired tank level across and down to the filter and sump.

One hole, two outlets. Not as versatile as Rivermuds but less plumbing.

Should have another large update tomorrow. Been fighting freezing temperatures all week so it's been slow going on much of anything.

I've got the camera charging so it should be a fairly picture heavy update.

Hear ya on the cold weather, Gonna be fighting it when I start my project. I just dont have a shop, have to work in the garage with no heat.

Well my shop has a wood stove in it and semi insulated walls. But the bay doors and the ceiling of the 2nd floor are both uninsulated.

So its pretty cold. I actually got tired of fighting the cold. After the bottom dried I brought it into my apartment. I was gonna paint the rest of it yesterday since it would dry MUCH faster in here. But I went messing around in my jeep and got stuck so I was gone all day yesterday.
