300ish Gallon plywood - First attempt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Muni, where did you get your plywood sheeting and what type/grade did you get? I was just over at Lowes/home depot seeing if I could get what I need there but man, their plywood is complete sh*t. I was looking at grade A 3/4 birch/maple, and I can't remember the 3rd type but it was crap too. There were voids in nearly every piece I looked at. The only thing I managed to find that was decent was 2x4s.

Looks like I'm going to have to check out some of the local-ish lumber stores.

I got the 3/4" I used from a local lumber yard here. It's Cabnet grade 7 ply. I think is it called "G1 grade" or something like that.

My local home depot had 5 ply 3/4" birch that looked good but as mentioned before for an extra 2 dollars a sheet I went with the higher ply count for a bit of piece of mind.

Check with the lumber yards and see what they got. That would probably be your best source for quality material if lowes or home depot fails.

Sorry for the lack of updates but getting my jeep stuck for two days put a damper in things.

I'm just gonna relax at home and paint the tank tomarrow. So hopefully will have some photos for the masses.

Ok. Got the tank itself painted today. Checked with my Ace and they seem to have forgotten about me and did not order my paint last week. So looks like I have to wait until next Thursday when the next shipment gets in. So I guess I'll be finishing up my sump until then.

Here is the setup after its paint job.

man, it really irks me when i order something from somewhere and don't get it when i should. sucks to hear that happened.

the tank is lookin great. i wasn't to sure about your color choice at first but the black molding gives it a nice touch.

just be carefull with whatever else you put in the tank with those cats. i hear that they can be pretty aggressive towards other fishies.

I liked the gray and as mentioned I got the gallon for 8 bucks instead of the normal 40 so I could live with it. But after bringing it into my place it looks gray blue. Which is what color my walls are so its just a few shades different from the walls. The black trim definitely helped the look of it a lot. The tank will be getting the same treatment after the glass and waterproofing is done.

I just realized I've been waiting on this paint for 10 days now. So much for the quick order. But as mentioned it's about 80 bucks cheaper then going to the other place in town that carries it. They are 25 dollar higher price and would charge 40 bucks or more for the special order.

i dont know what you're talking about, I love the color of this tank, very relaxing and with a very modern touch. Are you painting it indoors? how's the fumes from the paint?

After painting the stand in the shop I figured out how strong the paint is. Which is not very. Had 0 issues painting the tank inside. Just cracked a window and turned on the fans.

I may be doing the pool paint inside too as the shop is too cold to paint and for it to cure properly. Gonna test it first and see how bad it is.

cool. and im just throwing this out there, but if imo (maybe its just my crazy 16yr old mind -not sex related-) i would throw up a picture on that blank side of the tank. Imean if that's the side that's going to viewed constantly, i think it may start looking a little drab if it's just that blank wall looking back at you. And that color would contrast amazingly with some of these: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=172839&page=10 (the ones by maxxximus87) kinda that pop art sort of feel if you're into it. or maybe something slightly more relaxed, but still kinda showy: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=172839&page=11 (the one by WeeNe858) would look nice IMO. I don't know how proximity wise close they are to you, but you could see if they want to come and recreate their masterpieces directly onto your tank, that'd be cool.

IDK, just a random thought that just popped into my head and i wanted you to know about it.
