Let's see. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but hopefully it is.

So I just moved in to an apartment, and being alone and all that, I decided to y'know, to put some living stuff in it. Anyways long story short, I'm planning on getting a 30 gallon(actually it's 29) gallon TopFin tank(with the whole set).

That done, we move on to the fish(which is actually what this thread is about anyway.) And umm, this might seem funny but here's what I'm looking for.

  • tough (I might not be home like every hour of everyday of every week so...)
  • has a wide temperature range(cause the temperature in this apartment is like, cold for an hour then super hot for the next, not really important though, since there's a heater in the kit)
  • looks cool (not the average fish like cichilds, they look boring,no offence to cichild lovers though, but really, they are boring...to me)
  • won't likely jump so much(the hood on the aquarium looks quite...well...)
  • can go along with some 'decorative fish' like plecos?
  • can stay in the tank for like a few years?(I don't plan on getting a new tank even when I'm moving out)

I like the irisdent shark but we all know how big they get(unless of course, they can stay in the tank for like 4 years?:naughty:)

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

raphael cat fish, get several of those, but some people find them boring, I really dont think so, have a look at them in the catfish sections.

Ooo I know. But I won't have any wood in the tank. Maybe a few fake plants or two. And most probably it's going to be bare bottom.

you dont need that much of hiding place for raphs, they're a hardy fish to keep.

I gotta be honest...it sounds to me like u just described cichlids. Obviously with the exception of the No Cichlids comment haha

Well uh, I would say that cichlids are on the bottom of my list though. I mean, they're better than an empty tank right? And one exception is the oscar, which I always wanted to keep(had a few in the past, went for vacation and then they weren't there when I came back, not sure where they went:confused:)

As for the raphael, yea, I might just get those, anyone has any info on them? Like a care sheet or pictures, that would be awesome.

On a side note, an interesting fish I came across today is a so called needlefish. Looks like a thin gar if you ask me. Anyone has any info on these?

If you want somehting differant I have just the thing. I have an African Knife and soon to have a Long Nose Elephant Fish, in with my normal trop mix. 29gal.
I also have a Green Spotted Puffer in a 16 gal. You could put two of them in a 29, just not anything eles. They are all a blast st watch.
The Oscar would make it in there for a short time but would soon need bigger digs.

PUFFERS! That's interesting. There's one problem with that though, where can I find it? Elephant nose is interesting too. But the local petsmart(my only source of fish for now) doesn't have it.
