Sounds good. Have you looked into the Herbie or Beananimal overflow systems? They operate on a full siphon so it is essentially silent. From what I understand if you set it up correctly, it will be much quieter than a standard Durso standpipe. The issue with the dursos is that you will still have noise from water crashing into your sump. Even if you submerge the drain lines in the sump, you won't hear water crashing, but what you will hear is gurgling/bubbling. The full siphon eliminates this issue.

This is what I was thinking...feel free to give input:

I have the 300 gal with two FX5 plumbed into 4 filtered drops in the bottom of the tank two are plumbed together for each filter under the tank. The returns are at either end and I can make them any way i want. I use mine set up as a peninsula between dining and living room. It is big enough that the fish do not seem to care in the slightest. I use in line heaters and a UV on one side 8 hours per day. I use T5's for lighting and leds for moon light. I adjust the lighting according to the plants CO2 and fish requirements. I have black fine gravel to show the inmates colors that are currently housed. I have had over the years predatory to schools of discus to now I have large show goldfish. It is a stunning tank! I am with goldfish having to clean the FX5's every three months. They are messy. With the large predators about the same and the large Discus group about every year and 1/2. . I also have a bulkhead installed at either end to drain the tank and to hook gravel vacuums to. I hope you are on concrete as they babies are very heavy.

I setup a 300 with a 75 gallon sump last year and it's by far the quietest, easiest to maintain and most flood proof sump ive ever built. Dual 1 1/5" Herbies running into a 2" gate into 2 7"x16" socks. Returns are through 2 Q1 6000's into 2 1 1/5 checks back up through 1" lines with siphon breaks at the water line.

Will definitely incorporate the basic design into all future tanks. plenty of other cool ways to build a sump, but of all the sumps I've built over the years, this one is the most user friendly.

Page 3 in the 300 build in my sig has alot of pics of the sump as it was being installed. Best of luck with yours!! Sounds like a great tank you've got planned

Ill do some readings up on the methods of draining today. I did talk to john yesterday and asked to get a quote on a 10'x3'x2' and 10'x2 1/2'x2' also to compare the price to the 8'x3'x2'....we'll see how that goes also and I might go bigger.

The sump is a 135, not 150 like I thought, but that is enough :)

I've been planning my 450G build for a while now and the filtration has been a tough decision but I think I've decided on going with a combination of a sump and a Ultima II filter. My goal is to make maintenance easy and to have a relatively quiet system with lots of flow. The tank will have an external 4' long overflow with beananimal standpipe configuration dumping the water silently down to the sump. This will handle the surface skimming and aeration of the water. Auto water changer will be incorporated through drip-emitters in the tank and overflow pipe drilled into the sump. The Ultima II will be plumbed into the lower section of the tank and handle most of the mechanical filtration by pulling in the detridus and uneaten food into its powerful intakes. The Ultima will also give me a super simple way to drain water in the tank with its back-flush option.

Picked up the 135 tonight and item closer to my dream tank :)

Anyone tried any of those led spotlights? I'm thinking I might mount them in my hood about 12" off the tank and I think 20 watts will work with maybe 4 to 6 of them. Input????
