That vid does seem like good way to hang socks on the baffle....

Yea, I did this before and its easy to change the socks. Also, I wasn't taking anything as criticism at all, but all great information. Sorry that I ramble on sometimes, but with good planning this will be what I want :)

I've been watching videos and reading a lot, and even after 30+ years of fish keeping I'm still learning. Thanks again for all the ideals and keep them coming.

I'm thinking this as setup for my sump: 4 - 7"x16" socks, moving bioballs chamber, ref with plants, then return with mag 24.

Might add a chamber for media such as crushed coral, etc...

Thoughts? This will be a 125 gallon sump

My only recommendation would be to ditch the Mag 24 for a Laguna Max flo. The closest comparable model is the Laguna Max flo 2400.

Mag Drive 24 @ 5' head pressure 1850GPH drawing 265 watts
Laguna Max Flo 2400 @ 5' head 1796GPH drawing 100 watts

The Mag Drive is very inefficient. The Laguna will probably pay for itself in the first year in energy savings.

If you want more GPH, you can get the Laguna Max Flo 2900 which does 2,409GPH at 5' head and uses only 130 watts...that's half the energy consumption of the Mag 24 and still pushes 559GPH more.

The Laguna's are nice pumps...I've been running one for ~ 1 year and it's been quiet and as efficient as stated.

After doing some reading I'm liking these a lot. Thanks for suggesting them.

No problem. After seeing how big energy hogs those mag drives are, I've been trying to get the word out.

Running the Laguna 2400 versus the Mag 24 would save me $485/year...electricity is crazy expensive where I live, so I'm all about running efficient equipment.

Good luck with your build!

Ill be going with the laguna max flo 2900 and its a about half the watts and will push my 2" drains. Thanks again.

I don't have much advice to contribute but I can give my experience with lighting and inline heater setup. If you are going canister then I would recommend using Hydor inline heater. I have a 300w on my 150g and I absolutely loved it. If you want to make your own inline you can look up jcardona old thread. He posted a DIY with very good details.

I used 24" t5 and pair it with this LED light from Home Depot. It's not blue but does a great job dimming the tank. The fish actually preferred the dimmed light over the bright T5. Sometimes the fish are too feisty with each other under the bright t5 lights.
