350 Gallon setup and journal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The maintenance schedule is not that important to me as maybe some others. I currently do water changes every 3 days on all my tanks and will do the same on the 350. Also, I clean one of the filters on each tank every two weeks. So, I'm use to having a routine cleaning schedule and don't care if it takes 6 months for it to get dirty because ill clean it before then anyways. I even do my sump cleaning that way also.

Do you think a 75 gallon sump with maybe a fx5 will be enough? I can hardline a heater and uv in I guess (even though I've never done that). However I have set up both sumps I've had myself and I like working with the pvc.

Going to draw up a pic of what I'm looking to do this weekend and will post it up.

my 300 gallon has a 75 gallon sump and that's it, no additional canister, so if you added an fx5 I'm sure that would be very adequate depending on what stock you have in there.

I don't see any reason you couldn't have a sump made from a long tank with socks on one end, pumps on the other and in between a bag of ceramic rings. You really don't even need the baffles.

This would make cleaning very easy - vacuum the substrate occasionally, clean the filter socks (longer socks equal longer intervals before cleaning them) and do your water changes.

I spend maybe an hour per week changing/cleaning socks (it would be less if I could use longer socks but that's another story) and vacuuming substrate. I do have a drip system though so no time spent refilling the tank.

Plumbing in the UV is easy, and if you have a sump, just dump the submersible heater in there and you're set. I think I mentioned the Jehmco heater, I have the 500 watt version with digital display and it's great.

I could keep the 220 and use it for my sump :D

Although its veeerrrryyy heavy lol. I would prefer something smaller for ease of moving it underneath.

Genius idea chris. Tell your wife you sold the 220. Make a sump out of it, but instead of a traditional sump make it also a riparium. So it will hold around 100 gallons and be the coolest sump ever. Oooorrrr you could just give me the 220... :)

Well, if its cheaper for me to turn the 220 into a sump, then to sale it and buy another....then I might just do that. Have to think about it and still really undecided on which way to go.

If I didn't have to do baffles, I could probably go the 3-drawer route on each side of the sump. Then plug 2 pumps in the middle for the returns. Got my wheels turning lol

I think if you want sump, you will need to call the tank company for drill instruction now...

Well, it will come with dual overflows if I choose that option and I also got the email back today and its free shipping :)

I think for this size tank I might be swaying towards a sump....large sump.

If you go big you'll have lots of room to play. Here's a pic of my sump. 6 ft acrylic 75 gallons. From the left:

Filter socks
Empty chamber with overflow for drip system which empties to my yard.
K3 moving bed filter
Ceramic rings
Heater
Return pumps

I like that and if I do a sump I just have to ensure its quiet. Im figuring ill make them below water level in the sump.
