Why don't you put some rings around your neck and stretch it too, that would make you look even more amusing.

WOW! 3 year old thread, i'm glad current active members aren't doing stuff like that. it just looks dumb....but then again, creative individuals could argue that they're just fighting the norm and bucking the trend so it's acceptable and they'll find just enough people that think it looks cool and boom, a counter culture cult is born. Sound familiar?

My sister has guages (or "stretches"??), wears a mohawk, dies her hair crazy colors. So do all of her "weird" friends at MIT. Something tells me they won't have any trouble getting jobs, corporate, start-up, entrepreneurial, non-profit, whatever they please. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're the ones who are going to end up doing the hiring. Honestly, I am impressed at MIT's culture which embraces and encourages differences. Being the same isn't just boring, it's dangerous because there's no change.

I don't know why this went to 20 pages, it's like so many people have never seen thick earings before. Maybe it's because I'm eastcoast but this is old hat. Would be interested in seeing how people's responses break up by geographic location.

Bottom line is there's lots of paths to success, and everyone definition of success is different.

One question though: if its stupid to call them guages, how are you supposed to call them? Don't see why using that word would be offensive.

I don't need people to be fans of anything I do. That wasn't the point of this thread to begin with.

Now that is disgusting to me. But would that guy care? No.

The word gauges isn't offensive. But the "Earrings" you wear aren't called gauges. Gauge refers to the size. I call them plugs, and call it stretching. Not gauges and gauging. They're plugs, eyelets, tunnels, etc. But EVERYONE seems to call them gauges these days. Thats just not what I call it.

I have to say that I love your homemade jewlery, you're a very talented artist...also I have to agree that calling all large piercing gauges is irritating. Gauge is only an indicator of size i.e. "What gauge are your new plugs?" I know that most people don't know the difference but it's a pet peeve of mine, expecially since I hear that term used inproperly all the time.
