3D printing your aquarium parts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
3D modeling software is extremely expensive.

Exactly. What it really comes down to is the investment is not worth it unless you plan on actually using the software and equipment to recoup your money. There are complete packages out there in the 2000.00+ range. To me I would suffer with no little homemade bubble making treasure chest or 80+ piece background and buy a bigger tank. That is just my .02

It's probably a little early for this to be cost effective in the hobby, but as more people start using it, the options will grow.

Now, if I could print up filter socks for a quarter, sign me up. no more bleaching and cleaning!

Wow, never thought of this. Hell people are making gun parts with them why not aquaria parts. I would igmaine making a HOB filter would be pretty easy, provided you use a bought motor. Filters, cleaning gear, decor would be great. I wish I could afford one haha, being able to make whatever facade or decor piece alone would be amazing. Plus using it to make everyday items like forks knives plates etc.

Early? Rapid prototyping has been around for over 2 decades.

you left out the rest of my sentence. Early to be cost effective in the hobby (for the consumer/hobbyist making their own random little parts)

I said almost exactly what you said in your post one minute earlier...

It is extremely difficult to make detailed objects with the software not to mention.
I can make a reducing bushing in 15 seconds (literally) in Solidworks or AutoCad.
Now say you tell me to make a background or treasurechest, that would take me 10+ hours if I'd even be able to do it at all.
Of course, the files can be saved and shared and possibly sold. But file + material + depreciation of the printer will cost the same or more than buying the already existing item in the store. That was made in a mold or something of that sort
