4' 90 Gallon converted to 240 4' Square Plywood and Glass Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I evened out the spacing on the front windows, since I didn't have them that way in the pics before the last ones I posted.

I'm going to put a piece of plywood over the hole for the second small window, so it will be easy to install the second one if I choose to buy the glass or come across a piece that fits it.

Why don't you use the two larger sheets on perpendicular sides instead of opposite each other?

If you're not impressed with that, then check this out. Used everything else the same except changed the floor and walls accordingly to use a sheet of plywood as the bottom for a 4'x8' footprint. 440 gallons from 2.5 sheets of plywood and about a dozen or so 2x3 or 2x4 lumber. All with 3/8" glass from an existing 90 gallon. I have to draw in the bracing, but it's not that much more than the 240. I can't wait to get done with the 4300 to start on this project. I'm most likely going to convert my 210 to a 420+ as well.

I could, but the way I want to put the tank in the garage makes having the windows opposite each other better. The tank could be made with both windows on the front as well. There's many different possibilities.

The most important parts of this were the sandwiching of the plywood between the dimensional lumber which lessens materials it takes to build these tanks as compared to other plywood tank builds and the simplicity of the construction. Most other plywood builds I've seen depend on the coating to reinforce the plywood, so you couldn't use Blue Max or Pond Coat liquid rubber products to coat them.

Well, sort of found a design flaw... At least with wanting to use the 4' width of the plywood. Doh, the glass is 4', so I'd have to go old school and put the bottom inside the tank walls instead of under it. Not really a big deal on a plywood tank, but I've always hated that on glass tanks.
