A female would fit. My school has 2 7 inchers in a 55 gallon tank. Well they should really have 1. But a female would fit.Have you ever seen a fully mature one? I seen one at our LFS, easily 10".

^ 10-12" isn't big? That's not a small fish and in a standard 55 it would have trouble turning around.
yea It is rare that they get that big. They are also thiner than Oscars and other"big boys". I new something was fishy about that. i goggled other threads on MFK with the same question. People said that a JD could live in a 50 gallon tank.If you happen to get a 12 incher it will need a 70 gallon tank. but chances are they will not get that big.A 55gal is perfect for a JD. A 10-12" is pretty max sizes for a JD and it is not that common size. Electric Blue JD do not get large as the normal JD.
If they have enough room they can grow that size[/QUOT Possibly, but why is there growth not stunted in 50 gallon tanks.
Lot of people kept JD in 50-55gals most sources say JD often reach 8 inches long. I never heard about 12" JD through very few JD has hit 10". Als JD is thinner than Midas/Red Devils. A few extra inches won't hurt JD in 55gal.If they have enough room they can grow that size
Would suggest him getting any kind of fish, appearently this A-hole has no idea how to care for anything.
