No, in a hospital tank. I decided to go with an arowana in the 230 gal and the tank should be cycled and ready to add fish again tomorrow. If the Africans make a complete recovery they'll go into the 125 gal.

The coppersafe killed off all the bacteria but the snails were still alive even though the ammonia was off the charts. I then added 1/2 a bottle of ammonia to try to wipe out the snails once and for all but they are still in the tank so now after a couple of weeks and several water changes the tank has been recycled . A goldfish lived for a day so I added 4 clown loaches and they've made it for another day and all is well so tomorrow I'll add the other 5 loaches , the next day the silver dollars , then the vieja , the rotkeil, and eventually the RTG arowana. As long as the water keeps testing OK. When I add the arowana I'll add 2 more AC110's so total filtration will be 2-FX 5 --- 3 AC 110's and a uv sterilyzer.

I had a similar experience some time ago. Have about 50 tanks and had problems in about half of the free standing tanks. After reading thrpough all that has been written I feel there might have been a bacteria infestation. The question that needs asking is "Where did it come from?" What did you do differently, that is shortly before your problems started, to the tank?
I had a tank of 3-4cm fry, about 130 of them, that where looking fine at lunch time but by 5pm 98 were dead. The remaining fish were transferred to another tank and they are still alive today, about 12months later.
As quicky as my problem appeared it disappeared after 3 weeks.
Do you do a gravel suction when you do a water change? I do not believe in doing 50% water changes unless I really have to.
I understand how you must have felt at the loss of your fish.

The problem never got better. When I returned home from work I found that most fish that had the ulcers had gotten worse and decided to euthenize all fish. I now have only one peacock in my community tank and have no plans to set up another African tank anytime soon. I've since put my RTG arowana and clown loaches in my 230 and all is well so far. My 125 has silver dollars, vieja synspilum and rotkeil sev so there is no tank space left for Africans. I will likely have another African tank at some point in the future but for now this chapter is closed.
