Warning!!!! Killing the snails can cause a huge spike in ammonia and if it gets to high, it can kill your beneficial bacteria.

Just start over with the FX5 filter and buy new media.

BTW when fish swim they create plenty of ammonia to feed your BB. Snails help reduce nitrates by feeding off the protein in the poop. If the poop where to break down, it would create additional ammonia then nitrite then nitrate. It's another source of ammonia for BB, not the only one. This is why my tanks have them and are very healthy.

Nuking the tank is the way to go, but you shouldn't put your AC110 on until after you remove the coppersafe from your tank and have healthy fish to feed the BB.

Good luck which ever way you go.:headbang2

I have no advice for you. I have never heard of this problem before. Snails looked gross, at least they were not visiable on the glass.

I understand the thought process with the snails, but if you had added air and other surface agitation then that should of create enough added oxygen. This whole thing is confusing. Thank God you are tracking this and not giving up as other have done with this amount of trouble.

Since there isn't much bacteria left anyway and the majority of the snails have been removed, I bleached the remaining media and nuked the tank with coppersafe. No fish are in the tank so its time to start over.

I'm still treating the dimidiochromis kiwinge in the picture. I'll let you know how it works out.

Sorry I must have skipped past this post earlier. I think I can clear this up for you Mike. The events leading up to this catastrophe were a comedy of errors on my part. First of all I reduced the flow on one of my FX5's to accomodate the UV sterilyzer. I did a 40% water change and took out all of the rock- in case something in the rocks was poisoning the fish. At the same time I noticed my powerhead was not working and I removed it. It had an airline running to it as well. At that point there was less air going in and less flow. When I filled it back up I filled it over the outputs but I figured there would still be enough agitation as I added an AC 110 . I guess I was wrong. Basically it was chain of unfortunate circumstances that led to the demise of my fish. Live and learn I guess. I just hope someone benefits from this thread. I'll get some more pics when I get home from work tonight.
