I've increased aeration and temp. I'm not sure what category eurythromicin falls into but thats the antibacterial medication I tried. Currently I'm on the second round with parasite clear. I added enough to treat a 240 gallon tank this time around and treated for 2 treatments as per directions. If that doesn't work I'll try the antibacterial meds again using a different type. Incidently its cost me over $100 so far not including the UV sterilyzer. I could easily just decide enough is enough but I'd like to get to the bottom of this so others can benefit from it.

So far I've tried removing him to a QT . Treated with salt and increased temp. Then others startedto show signs so I decided to treat main tank. Started with parasite clear but only did one treatment and only treated water volume not tank size (treated 200 gallons). Added salt at 1 tsp / 5 gallons increased temp and aeration. Lots of water changes. Next I added eurythromicin following instructions on the box. That treatment lasted one week. Followed that with more water changes. Still no improvement. Next I treated the tank for a week with Melafix followed by more water changes. Still no improvement. Now onto my second treatment with parasite clear treating 240 gallons for 2 treatments. Followed by more water changes. Not sure what the next step will be.

wow-i hate it when stuff like this happens! sorry that you are going through this mess, how are they all doing? any improvement? i know you tried erythromycin and that is a broad spectrum antibiotic, but so is tetracycline.. and i have heard that it sometimes works better than e-myacin. but i dont know. i had a yellow lab with an ulcer, i qt'd her and tried salt, melafix/pimafix, maracyn, then later erythromycin for a week, she actually healed up, but i found her dead. i would say what you have isnt parasitic, but bacterial, and id read up on broad spectrum meds and maybe try something else..

i dont know what to tell you, i havent had luck with this sort of thing, there is a flow chart on the internet on freshwater diseases, you follow the symptoms, and it tells you what drug to try..

im hoping it isnt tb, but here is this link: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/information/Diseases.htm#Tuberculosis

wish i could help but im stumped..:screwy:

Thanks for the link but so far I have no reason to believe its TB. Fish is still very active and any time I see a sunken belly I avoid purchasing those fish. If I saw that in my tank I'd destroy the fish immediately. I was advised on another forum to try melafix directly on the wound. A couple of different people have suggested this. My only concern is that it treats the individual but not the tank. Because this is a cheaper way to go and because I've added the UV sterilyzer I'm not as concerned about spreading the disease so this could be a viable option. One person said he injected the fish under the infected area. I think I'll try a topical application first ie. Swab with a q-tip - as injections would require knocking the fish out first and I think they've had enough stress.

That is a good idea about the stronger antibiotic. Sounds like you would have nothing to lose if is going to wipe out the tank anyway. You will likely have to cycle again depending on what antibiotic. Does fish TB leave open sores ? That is rare but another possiable culprit. I think there is no cure either. If its fish TB the recommended treatment is euthenize. Look it up and see if it matches the symptoms.

I had this happen once, and melafix and pimafix took care of it. I'm not sure about your situation, but it helped mine. I'd really like updated pics if you find something that works. I hope I never have to go through it. Sending luck your way!

what if you applied betadine to the wound? i have heard of ppl doing this to open wounds also.. i dont think its TB either, but any open sores make you wonder. i would try another broad spectrum antibiotic (tetracycline) and apply some betadine or melafix (ive never put melafix directly on a wound.. ) and see what happens.. wish you the best of luck, i hope something works!

I just found this stuff on-line so I am hoping it cures whatever it is I've got in my tank. I just ordered it rather than trying something that may or may not work. This is specifically for treatment of ulcers. This seems to be a pretty good site for diseases.
